This Week on TV – 3/29/09-4/4/09

Welcome to a new week of TV! Lots of GREAT stuff this week! Tons of premieres, some major finales (ER, Life on Mars, etc) and lots of other great eps. So let’s see what’s on, shall we? Jump with me to see this week’s schedule!

Sunday

Sunday is the series premiere of 3 shows. First up is the 2-hour premiere of Any Dream Will Do on BBC America at 8/7c. Hosted by Graham Norton (The Graham Norton Show), along with expert panelist John Barrowman (Torchwood) and legendary composer Andrew Lloyd Webber, the show searches for new talent to play Joseph in the West End revival of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. After rounds of auditions, twelve boys make the cut to prove they have the charisma and star quality to land the lead role of Joseph. Each week they are put to the test with ensemble numbers, solo performances, and exercises to test their skills. They’ll have to impress the judges to move along and get closer to becoming the next Joseph and Britain’s next theatre star.

Next up is the series premiere of Royal Inquest on TLC at 10/9c. The show goes behind the scenes of the world’s most intriguing royal scandals and digs deep to find out the truth behind the headline. In addition to the mysteries, they investigate the royals’ loves, hates, and passions…their heroic triumphs and their bitter defeats. Filled with twists and turns, red-herrings and dead-ends, each story-driven episode will be sure to keep viewers glued to the screen until the very end.

Tonight’s third and final series premiere is the one I’m looking forward to the most. The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency has its 2-hour premiere on HBO at 8/7c. Based on the best-selling book series, The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency by Alexander McCall Smith, it stars Grammy Award winner Jill Scott (Tyler Perry’s Why I Get Married?), Lucian Msamati, Anika Noni Rose, Colin Salmon (Hex), David Oyelowo (Five Days on HBO & A Raisin in the Sun), Idris Elba & John Kani. The pilot was filmed on location in Botswana.

Tonight’s other biggie is the 1-hour special, Comedy Central Special: Jim Gaffigan: King Baby, on Comedy Central at 9/8c. Jim plays Andy on My Boys on TBS, which has its third season premiere on the 31st of this month. The DVD and CD of the King Baby special will be released on 3/31/09 as well! (Check out the site tomorrow for news about a contest for the My Boys season premiere, where you can win a poster signed by the cast, a tshirt and other neat little items!

Tuesday

Tuesday is the season finale of 3 shows. First up is Dogg After Dark at 8:30/7:30, followed by T.I.’s Road to Redemption at 9/8c, both on MTV. Finally, it’s the season finale of one of my family’s favorite new shows this season, Wreckreation Nation on Discovery at 10/9c.

Also tonight is the series premiere of 3 shows. First up is the premiere of Cupid on ABC at 10:02/9:02c. Trevor Pierce is a larger than life character who insists that he is Cupid, the Roman god of love. He claims that he has been sent to New York City by Zeus to bring 100 romantically challenged couples together before being allowed to return to Mt. Olympus. His persistence eventually lands him in a mental institution. Three months later, Trevor is found to be harmless to himself and others and is released — but under certain conditions. Placed under the care of psychiatrist and self-help author Dr. Claire McCrae, he must attend her singles group therapy sessions on a regular basis so that she can monitor his progress. Trevor returns to his rented room upstairs from the struggling Tres Equis Cantina, owned by Felix Araiza and his sister, Lita. In exchange for rent, Trevor becomes a bartender and creates an atmosphere for singles looking for lasting love. His ideas, such as half-price margarita nights and mariachi karaoke duets, could help him bring couples together and ultimately take him closer to the day that he gets to return to Mt. Olympus. No one believes Trevor’s story, but everyone finds him to be quite charming. Although he possesses a great knowledge of Greek mythology, Claire finds that Trevor constantly interferes and contradicts her when it comes to her pragmatic style of helping lonely hearts find their soul mates. In true love, Claire believes it’s all about friendship and mutual respect; for Trevor, heat and passion conquer all. Only time will tell who will win this battle for love. Cupid stars Bobby Cannavale (Will & Grace & Third Watch) as Trevor, Sarah Paulson (Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip) as Claire, Rick Gomez (What About Brian) as Felix and Camille Guaty (Las Vegas) as Lita. The romantic dramedy was created by Rob Thomas (Veronica Mars), who serves as executive producer/writer, along with a bunch of other producers from Veronica Mars as well.

Also tonight is the 40-minute premiere of Osbournes: Reloaded on FOX at 9:20/8:20c. Ozzy, Sharon, Jack and Kelly Osbourne are back. The show features audience interaction, rowdy comedy and hilarious stunts that will shock and amuse. Outrageous sensibility and brash humor are at the cone of the series and the show will feature some regular bits as the family goes out and about to bring in the laughs. Following the premiere, the show will return to the FOX schedule as a series of one-hour specials to air later in the season. (So yeah, you can’t really count it as a series premeire, more like a special, but that’s what it is labeled as, so…. I went with it. *shrugs*)

Tonight’s last series premiere is Pretty Wicked on Oxygen at 11/10c. Ten divas, who use their looks to get ahead, get out of traffic tickets, get a job, etc, compete in this new reality series. It puts looks aside and has these prima donnas compete to see who is the most beautiful on the inside for a grand prize of $50,000. It is hosted by CariDee English.

Tonight is also the season premiere of My Boys on TBS at 10:30/9:30c. Don’t forget to check the site for the contest to win a bunch of neat My Boys items!

Finally, there is a 1-hour special for The Bad Girls Club on Oxygen at 10/9c.
