This Week on TV – 4/5/09-4/11/09

Welcome to a new week of TV! Lots of GREAT stuff this week! Tons of premieres, season AND series, and several finales, including Friday Night Lights & many others. So let’s get to it! Jump with me to see this week’s schedule!

Sunday

Sunday is the season finale of 1000 Ways to Die on Spike TV and The United States of Tara on Showtime, both at 10/9c.

Tonight is also the series premiere of River Monsters on Animal Planet at 10/9c. Extreme angler Jeremy Wade is on the hunt for the freshwater fish with a taste for human flesh. This international excursion through the dark side of the watery depths mixes action and adventure with incredible mysteries, edge-of-the-seat chases and a battle of will between man and almost supernatural beasts that lurk in the serpentine waterways of the planet, subsisting murderously underwater and growing to truly awesome sizes. Like all the best horror movies, the images are intense and immediate, gritty and real. Wade illustrates to the viewer, like a forensic investigation, exactly how these river monsters are constructed to kill.

It’s also the series premiere of Russell Simmons Presents: Brave New Voices on HBO at 11/10c. Young poets compete in regional qualifying events in New York, Ft. Lauderdale and San Francisco for the chance to represent their city at the Brave New Voices 2008 National Slam Championship. Among those vying for places in the six-person poetry teams: B. Yung, a Brooklyn street teen with fire in my chest; Britney, a fearless competitor with cerebral palsy and huge ambitions; Mike, a crowd-pleasing audience favorite; Jasmine, a team leader coping with sickle-cell disease; and Ericka, a novice who compensates for her tough upbringing through writing and over-eating.

There are also 5 season premieres tonight. First up is Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom on Animal Planet at 7/6c. Then at 8/7c is the premiere of Food Network Challenge on Food Network. At 9/8c are the premieres of In Treatment on HBO (followed by a 2nd new episode at 9:30/8:30c) and The Tudors on Showtime. Then at 10/9c is the premiere of My First Place on HGTV.

Monday

Monday is the series premiere of Surviving Suburbia on ABC at 9:32/8:32c. The show follows Steve (Bob Saget) and Anne (Cynthia Stevenson) Patterson, a seemingly normal couple who have been married for 20 years, have two children and a cookie cutter house in the idyllic suburbs. But Steve maintains a rather cynical point of view on family, friends, neighbors, society — pretty much everyone and everything — as he tries to survive suburban life. Surviving Suburbia takes a contemporary look at family life and the reasons one might have to question the system — How does exchanging keys with a neighbor for emergencies result in house sitting? Why do kids’ classroom projects inevitably become the parents’ responsibility? When did we start needing mediators to handle disagreements between adults? all of which goes to prove that it’s never just another sunny day in the suburbs. Also starring in the half-hour comedy series are Jared Kuznitz and G Hannelius as the Patterson kids. Jere Burns (Good Morning Miami) and Dan Cortese (What I Like About You) are recurring guest stars.

Tonight is also the series premiere of Night on Animal Planet at 10/9c, followed by a second new episode at 10:30/9:30c. Since the dawn of time, man has feared what happens when the lights go out. Tapping into our most primal fears, the show takes viewers into the darkness to experience the wonder and terror of nocturnal nature and all its annual activities. From the shivers down our spines when coyotes howl to the involuntary jumps when snakes hiss, to the uncontrollable urge to run when confronted with bright yellow beady eyes, host and animal expert Brandon McMillan faces this and more as he embarks upon the shocking and sometimes terrifying journey into the depths of darkness. McMillan goes on a global search to capture rare activity that happens only a night in varying nocturnal environments including jungles, deserts and forests in search of what it means to be nocturnal, where these creatures lurk and why they scare us to death.

It’s also the series premiere of The Unusuals on ABC at 10:02/9:02c. Like a modern-day M*A*S*H, The Unusuals explores both the grounded drama and comic insanity of the world of New York City police detectives, where every cop has a secret. It stars Amber Tamblyn (Joan of Arcadia), Adam Goldberg, Harold Perrineau (Lost), Jeremy Renner, Joshua Close, Kai Lennox, Monique Gabriela Curnen & Terry Kinney.

Thursday

Thursday is the series premiere of several shows. First up is Harper’s Island on CBS at 10/9c. It is about a group of family and friends who travel to a secluded island for a destination wedding. They’ve come to laugh… to love… and, though they don’t know it… to die. As the wedding festivities begin, friendships are tested and secrets exposed as a murderer claims victims, one by one, transforming the wedding week of fun and celebration into a terrifying struggle for survival. In every episode, someone is killed and every person is a suspect, from the wedding party to the island locals. By the end of the 13 episodes, all questions will be answered, the killer will be revealed and only a few will survive. It stars Christopher Gorham (Jake 2.0, Ugly Betty & Popular), Gina Holden (Dale on Flash Gordon), Harry Hamlin (Veronica Mars), Jim Beaver (Deadwood), Katie Cassidy (Supernatural), Richard Burgi (24), Victor Webster (Lincoln Heights & Charmed), among many others.

Tonight is also the series premiere of Parks and Recreation on NBC at 8:30/7:30c. This new mockumentary looks at the exciting world of local government. The documentary cameras follow Leslie Knope (Amy Poehler, NBC’s Saturday Night Live, Baby Mama), a mid-level bureaucrat in the Parks and Recreation Department of Pawnee, Indiana. In an attempt to beautify her town — and advance her career — Leslie takes on what should be a fairly simple project: help local nurse Ann Logan (Rashida Jones, The Office) take on defensive bureaucrats, selfish neighbors, real estate developers, and single-issue fanatics — whose weapons are lawsuits, the jumble of city codes, and the very democratic process that Leslie loves so much. Aziz Ansari and Aubrey Plaza also star.

The last series premiere tonight is Southland on NBC at 10/9c. From Emmy Award winners John Wells, Ann Biderman and Chris Chulack comes a raw and authentic look at the police unit in Los Angeles. From the beaches of Malibu to the streets of East Los Angeles, “Southland” is a fast-moving drama that will take viewers inside the lives of cops, criminals, victims and their families. Michael Cudlitz (A River Runs Through It) plays John Cooper a seasoned Los Angeles cop assigned to train young rookie Ben Sherman (Benjamin McKenzie, The O.C.). Cooper’s honest, no-nonsense approach to the job leaves Sherman questioning whether or not he has what it takes to become a police officer. Cudlitz and McKenzie are joined by other cast members including Regina King (Ray, Jerry Maguire) who plays Detective Lydia Adams. Adams lives with and is the primary caregiver of her mother. Her partner, Detective Russell Clarke (Tom Everett Scott, Boiler Room) is an unhappily married father of three. Michael McGrady (The Thin Red Line) plays Detective Daniel “Sal” Salinger. Sal oversees fellow gang detectives Nate Moretta (Kevin Alejandro, Drive, Ugly Betty) and Sammy Bryant (Shawn Hatosy, Alpha Dog). Arija Bareikis (Crossing Jordan) plays as patrol officer Chickie Brown, a single mom who dreams of being the first woman accepted into SWAT.

Then, back at the initial landings in November, 1942, Pro-Nazi French forces put up surprisingly strong resistance on land, at sea, and in the air against Patton’s invasion forces. After three days of intense fighting, a cease-fire is declared, and Patton triumphantly enters the port city of Casablanca. But bigger battles with the German Army loom on the horizon.
