Tonight was the first performance show of the Top 20 on So You Think You Can Dance. The judges for tonight were Nigel Lythgoe, Mary Murphy, and guest judge, Megan Mullally (Will & Grace, Children’s Hospital). Overall, it was a decent night, so let’s recap.
Jordan and Tadd
African Jazz choreographed by Sean Cheeseman
My Thoughts: Their hair styles were pretty awesome. The routine was quite intense and very physical. I loved the fact that the music made you want to join in the dance. It was very animalistic, and I really enjoyed it.
Judges: They all had lots of praise for how far from Tadd’s style this was, but you’d never be able to tell. Megan said it was an exciting way to start the show.
Sasha and Alexander
Contemporary choreographed by Travis Wall
My Thoughts: I always love it when Travis is the choreographer, because the routine is always filled with such emotion. This time was no exception. Sasha was amazing. She demanded attention with her fabulous portrayal of the angry woman. Alexander was a great partner, and he really did a great job with his part, as well. The routine was wonderful, and I enjoyed it thoroughly.
Judges: Mary thinks Sasha was strong, but she didn’t feel the connection between the partners. Megan thinks Sasha is an early favorite. Nigel thought it was bold and exciting. He called Sasha a modern day Amazon woman.
Clarice and Jess
Broadway choreographed by Tyce Diorio
My Thoughts: This routine is pure Broadway fun and excitement. Jess was amazing and brought such character to the dance. Clarice was sexy, but she isn’t as entertaining as Jess. It was a such a busy routine, I couldn’t take my eyes of the screen.
Judges: Megan thinks Jess is an amazing performer. Nigel thinks Jess is going to be one of his favorite boys this year. Mary thinks it was an amazing celebration of dance. She thought Jess was perfection tonight.
Ryan and Ricky
Lyrical Hip-Hop choreographed by Chris Scott
My Thoughts: I’m not sure what it is about Ryan that annoys me, but I find her so aggravating. Feelings aside, I enjoyed the routine. I think Ricky was the stronger dancer, but that’s just me. It’s not my favorite routine of the night, but it was a change from the usual hip-hop.
Judges: Nigel thinks they did a great job with the routine. Mary thinks Ricky is one of the most talented male dancers. Megan thought it was kind of beautiful.
Caitlynn and Mitchell
Jazz choreographed by Sonya Tayeh
My Thoughts: Unfortunately, Mitchell was injured during the rehearsals, so Caitlynn is dancing with Robert from Season 7. Sonya’s routines are always very intense, with an edge of darkness. Robert makes those lifts look effortless. Caitlynn did a really impressive job of keeping up with Robert, and even out dancing him at times.
Judges: Mary thinks she was brilliant. Megan thought she did an amazing job. Nigel thinks it was “10 across the board.”
Miranda and Robert
Latin choreographed by Jason Gilkison
My Thoughts: I love watching Robert perform. He’s so much fun. Miranda was really strong this routine, as well. Jason did an amazing job choreographing this routine. It was so upbeat and entertaining. It’s shaping up to be an awesome night!
Judges: Megan thought it was sheer delight. She said she has a crush on Robert. Nigel didn’t think Robert had good dance technique, and that Miranda needs to do a bit more. Mary thought it was fun, fun, fun. Robert needs to point his toes more, but he’s still on the hot tamale train.
Missy and Wadi
Jazz choreographed by Sean Cheesman
My Thoughts: Pandora’s box never looked so appealing. This routine was HOT! The tricks were so off the wall… literally. Using the box prop was genius.
Judges: Nigel thinks Missy is the whole package. He also thinks Wadi is brilliant. Mary thought it was phenomenal. Megan thinks it was amazing and that it was insane.
Melanie and Marko
Contemporary choreographed by Travis Wall
My Thoughts: What a gorgeous routine. Travis has outdone himself yet again. These two are outstanding dancers. It was amazing. I loved the movements and how the flow of them together became like one person. The chemistry was amazing.
Judges: Mary thought it was magical. Megan got chills. Nigel thinks this routine was Emmy worthy.
Ashley and Chris
Hip-Hop choreographed by Chris Scott
My Thoughts: Love the song, but not a huge fan of the routine. I think they smiled a little too much for a couple fighting over cheating. It wasn’t an overall exciting routine, but it was okay, just not great.
Judges: Nigel thought it was a lot of fun. Mary loved it. Megan loved it and thinks that SYTYCD has some of the best hair/makeup/wardrobe of any show on right now.
Iveta and Nick
Ballroom choreographed by Jason Gilkison
My Thoughts: Couples who do the Quickstep on this show tend to lose a member of the partnership, but I think this couple did a fabulous job. They looked like pros, and while Iveta is a ballroom dancer, Nick isn’t; he’s a tap dancer. I was impressed, and for once while watching the Quickstep, I wasn’t bored.
Judges: Megan thought it was incredible. Nigel thought it was fantastic. Mary thought it was unbelievable.
That’s all for tonight. It’s going to be hard to choose the bottom, because they were all pretty good. We know for sure Mitchell is in the bottom, because of his injury, my other couples are probably Ashley and Chris, and possibly Ryan and Ricky. Tune in to FOX on Thursday night at 8/7c to find out.
