If We Controlled Your Remote… 6/26/11

Well, it’s the start of another week, and it really is going to be a great week of TV. TV is beginning to amp up in terms of how much new stuff is on, so since Kyle did such a great job last week with the Remote posts, I asked if he’d join us on a permanent basis. He accepted, so everyone welcome him back by commenting below and saying hello! Now, on to what we think you should be watching tonight!

Last week’s series premiere of Falling Skies was an instant hit for myself and my family. It was the perfect combination of action/science fiction and personal/human interest. We honestly came away from it without anything negative to say, except that we wished we could watch the next episode right away. That doesn’t happen very often. It’s because of those reasons that it is my first pick tonight. If you don’t remember what it’s about, here’s a quick recap: Set six months after an alien invasion, a group of survivors band together to form a resistance against the aliens, which have overtaken Earth. One of the leaders of the resistance is series star Noah Wyle (ER), whose wife was killed in the invasion and whose middle son was taken by the aliens. Tom is becoming friends with (and it will most likely lead into a romantic relationship with) Dr. Anne Gless, played by other series star, Moon Bloodgood (Terminator: Salvation). At the end of last week’s premiere, Tom, his oldest son, and a small group of fighters began preparing to go find Ben, the teenager captured and being held and used by the aliens.

On tonight’s episode, a doctor (guest star Steven Weber, Happy Town, Brothers & Sisters, Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, Wings) joins the 2nd Mass with a theory about what might save the teenagers abducted by the aliens. But the plan could be derailed when Tom starts digging for answers to questions that have haunted him since the early days of the invasion. The 2nd Mass comes face-to-face with skitters and mechs when they attempt to rescue Ben.

I am so excited for the season premiere of True Blood tonight! 😀 This is one of those shows that is so addictive that you find yourself going through withdrawl during the week before you get a new episode. I love this show so much that during the past few months, I read the whole series that the show is loosely based on, and I say loosely, because they are not following the same plot line. In case you’re not aware, it’s the series written by the talented Charlaine Harris. My favorite is Eric. He’s scrumptious. If they follow the books at all, it’s going to be a stellar season.

On tonight’s season premiere, Sookie distances herself from Bon Temps, leaving Eric and Bill to try their charms on the human public. Sam bonds with other shifters, while Hoyt and Jessica argue about dinner. Lafayette is urged by Jesus to join a coven. Terry tries to dispel Arlene’s distressing emotions about impending evil.

My top pick for tonight is the season 4 premiere of Leverage. I have been a long-time fan of these Caper shows, ever since first seeing the 80’s Mission: Impossible reboot as a kid, and more recently discovering the original Mission: Impossible series on DVD. I suspect Leverage was inspired by these, as well as the recent UK series Hustle (of which I am also a huge fan). Each week, it is fun to see how this mix of characters (Mastermind, Grifter, Hacker, Hitter, and Thief) all work together, using their not-so-legal expertise to exact justice on the bad guy. At the end of season three, we were left with a bit of a cliffhanger, seeing Sophie wake up in bed with Nate. It will be interesting to see how long this new relationship will stay a secret and how it will affect the group dynamic. I’m really looking forward to another season of fun capers.

In tonight’s episode, “The Long Way Down Job,” the team must recover lost evidence from a mountain, while battling hired guns and bad weather. [Note from Jenny: I’ve seen tonight’s premiere, and it’s the team at its best. Pay special attention to Parker & Elliot, though, because they are stand outs tonight! I would have recommended it, but both Kyle & Lisa are, so… 🙂 ]

An all new season of Drop Dead Diva sure started off with a bang last Sunday night! We picked up after Grayson was hit by a car and in a coma. Jane sat at his bedside every day and even had a crazy dance sequence in her dreams, where Grayson woke up. When Grayson actually did wake up, he had a rather nasty bout of amnesia, where he didn’t even remember Jane, but then later, it all came back to him, only to share that he truly didn’t remember what happened during their dinner. Jane took on a case for an actor who was accused of a hit and run killing of a young girl. After having quit the firm, Kim was hired by a prior client to represent her against her ex-husband and had to face former employer and lover Parker on the other side of the courtroom. Everything was complicated, but as usual, was handled with a lot of hilarity!

Tonight, Kim takes on a case that involves suing a plastic surgery center for the death of a model. Grayson asks Jane for some help planning his wedding, and Stacy and Fred decide to take their relationship to the next level.

It should come as no surprise that my 2nd pick is the new episode of The Glades. This show consistently makes me happy with the storylines (both case-related and personal-related), and I always walk away wanting more. Last week saw the addition of Callie as an actual part of the FDLE team, working as the new Forensic Nurse. It will be interesting to see how that continues to play out, since Jim wasn’t too happy about it at first. By the end, I think he was much happier and more accepting, though, so… Of course, his ex is still around, which makes me grit my teeth, but since Callie is still with her husband, I guess I can’t blame him. *blah* LOL

On tonight’s episode, a 12-year-old’s joyride comes to a screeching halt at a police roadblock and sets off a murder investigation when a body is found in the trunk of the car she was driving. Beaten to death is Cole Hunter, NASCAR mechanic for the #74 car of Trey Lancer. Longworth goes head to head with top drivers and owners in his search for the truth. Meanwhile, Callie reconsiders entering the Witness Protection Program after Ray is brutally attacked in front of Jeff.

The Protector has been bringing us great episodes since its premiere a few weeks ago. This show was a big surprise for me, because I thought it was going to be one of those shows that I just enjoyed watching occasionally, but I’m learning that this show begs to be watched.

On tonight’s new episode, Gloria and Michelle uncover conflicting evidence when two lovers are found dead in their honeymoon suite; Gloria must address Nick’s obsessive texting with a girl.

I really enjoyed last week’s two-episode premiere of Falling Skies, which takes place 6 months after an alien invasion has wiped out 90% of the human race. (It also helps that it is set in my native Massachusetts, and that the group of survivors seems to be making their way towards my neck of the woods.) Parts of this show remind me of two other recent shows I enjoyed (Survivors and Jericho), where we get to see how a group of strangers band together for survival and to rebuild society.

Noah Wyle is great in his Librarian-like role of a history teacher who becomes second-in-command of a civilian militia group that, while just trying to survive, is plotting how they will reclaim the Earth and save the children that are being harnessed by the alien invaders. It is also nice to see Moon Bloodgood in another sci-fi series (I still miss her Journeyman show), playing the group’s pediatrician turned all-purpose doctor. Last week’s second hour, “The Armory,” did a good job of mixing a problem-of-the-week story with the overall story arc, which is how I expect the rest of the season will play out, as well. So far, the story, action, and special effects have been great, and I’m looking forward to the remaining 8 hours of the season.

In tonight’s episode, “Prisoner of War,” Tom encounters an alien skitter during a rescue mission, and a doctor may have a way to save harnessed children.

Get ready for a brand new season of Leverage and all new episodes featuring your favorite team of good guys for hire! At the end of season three, the team was laying low after finally fulfilling their obligation to an incredibly mysterious Italian agent who blackmailed Nate into hunting down a nefarious financier. Nate seems to have a whole new side of him brought out, and now he is more determined than ever to steady his focus on bringing down the bad guys and is reluctant to deal with the feelings and repercussions of his romp in the hay with Sophie.

Tonight kicks off season four, where the team must recover some lost evidence from a snowy mountain in Alaska, while battling hired guns and some awful weather.
