If We Controlled Your Remote… 8/14/11

August is flying by, and it’s just going to get busier. School is starting for many in the next few weeks, I’m packing up to move across the country again, and our favorite Summer shows are coming to an end to make way for Fall TV. See? Busy. Let’s not think about tomorrow yet, and we’ll just concentrate on the great television that we have to watch tonight.

Last week’s episode of True Blood was intense. The vampires went to sleep at sunrise with silver over them to stop them from walking into the sun when the witches cast the spell. It worked for many of them, but Bill underestimated the strength of Jessica, and she broke out of her chains. When we left her, she was making her way out of the mansion and into the sunlight, with Jason racing to stop her. Will he make it in time?

On tonight’s episode, Sookie and Eric side with the king, while Bill and Marnie prepare for an epic confrontation. Lafayette is possessed by a troublesome spirit. Tommy gains a new perspective on life. Sam finds a dangerous opponent in werewolf leader Marcus.

I can’t say enough great things about The Glades. Even when some of the storylines (such as Jim’s ex or Callie’s husband coming back into the picture), the show is amazing. Last week, Callie was dropping Jeff off for his last day at soccer camp before he becomes a Freshman at high school, when Jeff’s mentor, the coach, is found shot to death near the field. Throughout the episode, Jim saved the boy who accidentally killed the coach from killing himself, he got into a shootout and nearly got shot, and at the end of the episode, Jim asked Callie if she wanted to go for a beer. She accepted, and they walked off…well, not into the sunset, but close enough. 😉 Meanwhile, Callie and Carlos were talking about Jeff starting high school, and ended having Carlos and his teenage daughter come over for dinner so Jeff would make a friend before school started. Jeff and Addy hit it off and by the time dessert rolls around, they were sitting on the couch, laughing and playing video games. It was fun to see more interaction between Callie and Carlos, and the end couple of minutes really give me hope—as does the description for tonight’s episode…

Tonight, when body parts of a Coast Guard Reservist are found in the belly of a poached wild boar, Jim Longworth hunts the killer into the depths of the Glades. Meanwhile, Callie and Longworth decide to push the restart button on their romantic relationship.

It’s a big lineup tonight on Food Network. First up is The Next Food Network Star reunion show, followed by the season finale. We are down to the final three (Jeff Mauro, Susie Jimenez and Vic “Vegas” Moea), and tonight, we found out who will get their own show on the Food Network. I am rooting for Jeff, as I think his stand-up background would make him an entertaining show host. The only person I really don’t want to see win is Vic “Vegas.” First of all, I can’t stand when people give themselves stupid nicknames, and secondly, he reminds me too much of Guy Fieri (without the hair). I watch this competition every year, but never seem to watch any of the winners’ shows on Food Network. I think some of the more interesting candidates don’t win, and go on to have shows that I do actually watch (like 2008’s Adam Gertler).

In tonight’s episode, the three finalists must create the ultimate dish, and one is eliminated. Then the final two create their pilots and the selection committee chooses the winner.

Last week’s episode of Leverage was a really big one for Eliot. He played bodyguard (he was undercover as a security guy, but ended up being a friend/bodyguard) to the little girl of the man the team was conning. When she was kidnapped, the team had to race to find her, and Eliot was a huge part of that. It was really nice to see him as something other than just the muscle. Yes, he was the muscle in this episode, but there was a depth to him I hadn’t seen in a while. It was great. I really love this show and each of the characters. Parker and Hardison are too cute together. I think Hardison is my favorite character, but I really adore them all. There are two episodes tonight, which is double the pleasure, double the fun!

On tonight’s first episode, the Leverage crew aims their sights on a charming funeral director who embezzles money from her grieving mourners, and then they discover she is also selling the identities of the recently deceased to a deadly Mexican drug cartel.

On the second episode, when the Leverage team goes up against a con man from a long lineage of greats, they must pull off the biggest con of their careers. It’ll be interesting to see how they handle this. We’ve seen them go up against other con men regularly, but this sounds like it’ll be their hardest case yet.

Also airing on Food Network tonight is the second season premiere of The Great Food Truck Race. I was so disappointed last year when the Nom Nom Truck didn’t pull out a victory, as they were my favorite from the beginning. Tonight, we will be introduced to the 8 new food trucks from across the US that will be battling it out to see who gets the $100,000 prize. Each week, the teams head to a new location, and the truck that makes the least amount of money is sent home. However, there is also a “Truck Stop” challenge each week, which gives one truck an advantage in the main elimination challenge.

You never know who’s going to win—is it the personality/look of the truck that sells the food, or does the menu speak for itself? Which trucks will find the prime selling locations in their new city, and adapt their menus accordingly to attract more customers? Last season, it was the Heavy Metal loving Grill ’em All that won. So does that mean teams such as Devilicious (“insanely evil comfort food”) or Roxy’s Grilled Cheese will have a good chance? Or perhaps younger teams like last year’s Nom Nom have the advantage: Korilla BBQ (culinary school grad and friends making Korean food), Hodge Podge (cooking “the best in the Midwest” ), The Lime Truck (trio of southern CA foodies who don’t have a set menu, which may help them in challenges as they are used to thinking on their feet). Or will the winner be of the other teams: Seabirds (they may be a long-shot since they cook vegan, but they are a trio of women, which can’t hurt sales), Cafe Con Leche (Cuban food), and Sky’s Gourmet Tacos (“Mexican food with a splash of soul”). I’m looking forward tonight’s premiere, when the battle begins in Las Vegas.

Drop Dead Diva gets juicy tonight, when guest star Kathy Griffin shows up! The self-proclaimed D-lister goes toe to toe with Terry tonight, and only one can come out on top. This season only continues to bring the drama and the hilarity to a new level, and we’re loving every single moment of it. With fantastic guest stars and storylines, this season is a don’t miss!

Tonight, Jane represents a college student who accuses a star football player of Grayson’s alma mater of date rape. She also finds herself in quite the uncomfortable situation. Meanwhile, Kim gets duped into helping her sister in a divorce settlement.
