Alcatraz is one of the new shows featured on Fox in recent weeks, and it has come with a bit of fanfare and hype. The latest entry from critically acclaimed director J.J. Abrams (Alias) is similar to what he put out with Lost and Fringe, but it brings enough to the table to be interesting to people who aren’t die-hard science fiction fans. Regardless of whether you are on Direct TV NY, on cable, or some other type of television provider, you should have access to the show, since its on a major network and it is in a prime TV spot.

The basic idea behind the show is that the prisoners inside Alcatraz when it was in operation were not transferred to other facilities like the story goes. Instead, they were transported through time into the future. The show takes place in modern times, and many of the prisoners are just now starting to show up. Every week, viewers get to meet one of the new prisoners and enjoy tracking them down and capturing them. In addition to the villain of the week, the show reveals more and more about the mystery surrounding Alcatraz and what happened.
J.J. Abrams knows how to craft a mystery, as evidenced with his previous work, and this show is no exception. He uses many of the same storytelling elements, like flashbacks and asides to keep the story moving and interesting. While some may prefer that the show focus more on the mystery surrounding Alcatraz instead of the side stories, it is still a very interesting concept that many people are enjoying so far. The actors are accomplished and talented, such as Jorge Garcia (Lost), Sarah Jones, and Sam Neill. As long as viewers keep tuning in on a weekly basis, this show could be around for multiple seasons to come.
Alcatraz airs Mondays on FOX at 9/8c.
