Recap/Review – Castle – “An Embarrassment of Bitches” – 1/23/12

The murder of a dog show judge brings Castle and Beckett into the world of reality television star Kay Cappuccio and her little dog, too.

Recap:

The crime of the week: a dog show judge, Francisco Pilar, has been strangled with a dog leash. Castle and Beckett interview the attendees of the dog show – Mr. Greene, who was last to see him alive, and Mr. Hernand, a disgruntled dog owner, upset about losing “best in show.” Hernand blames Pilar’s death on a fixed dog show. Pilar, he says, was a bookie. That’s the only way his pup could have lost.

Pilar’s only family: his absolutely adorable golden retriever, Royal. Royal witnessed the murder, and when Castle sees him, he’s frantically pawing at the ground. Greene says it’s merely sign of bereavement.

A woman approaches Esposito, saying she saw a woman leave Pilar’s room around the time of the murder and has video. The woman on the video – Kay Cappuccio, reality star, who’s promoting her new perfume at the dog show.

Beckett, annoyed with Kim Kardashian’s Kay Cappuccio’s talentless rise to fame, arrives at her photo shoot with Castle. Kay hired Francisco to train her dog, Lolita, but after a few days, he gave her back. Kay went to speak with him after the show to ask why. When Beckett asks for the reason, Kay is unable to provide one, because when she went to meet him, he was already dead. In order not to tarnish her precious image, she called 911 only after she got in the limo.

Back at the precinct, the detectives notice some unexplained large deposits in Francisco’s bank accounts. On his planner, he was scheduled for a session with Dr. Barker, a therapist.

Dr. Barker references occasional depression, low self-esteem, and poor diet in her recent sessions. The poor diet included “scraps from the garbage, dead birds, and his own feces.” She’s a canine therapist! Phew! Francisco had canceled their last appointment without reason. Barker wants to have another session with Royal to tell the detectives what he saw.

Losing Ro Cham Beau to Castle and Esposito, Ryan finds not only the dog food for Royal, but also a bug sweeper at Francisco’s house.

In one of my favorite scenes tonight, Dr. Barker lays down for a session with Royal, under the watchful (and very confused) eye of Castle. Barker even imitates Royal’s pawing at the ground.

Esposito tracks Francisco’s last known location from his phone’s GPS, and he and Beckett arrive at the shady building to find two eager German shepherds waiting for them. As soon as you’re ready to plan their funeral, Jack Patterson saves the day! He worked for Francisco, helping him create the “Pilar retriever.” And those large deposits in his bank account – payments for a pup from the litter.

Francisco was sweeping for bugs at the warehouse. He wanted to keep knowledge of the breeding a secret. One person in particular that Francisco didn’t trust: Kay Capuccio.

She arrives at the station…with her entourage and Lolita in hand. As she walks by Ryan’s desk, the bug sweeper goes off. Castle accuses her of corporate espionage. Please use smaller words for the poor girl. The wire is in Lolita’s collar; Kay was the target of the bug.

When Kay is told of the camera, she is mortified. “They could have seen me without my makeup!” Castle’s theory: whoever planted the camera on Lolita heard that Kay was going to see Francisco and murdered him before he could tell Kay about the bug. Usually, his theories involve aliens or conspiracies…

Kay and Esposito, the shameless flirt, sift through photos to find the culprit. It’s traced back to Marcus Hiatt, who’s found in a car watching Kay work out. He says he accidentally stumbled upon the feed and overheard Francisco talking about shipments going through customs in Argentina. That doesn’t sound like dog training…

Jack Patterson is brought in for questioning, and it turns out he’s a customs agent and worked with Francisco to train drug-sniffing dogs. And what do dogs do when they smell drugs? They paw at the ground! Royal wasn’t grieving! And it just so happens that Kay’s new perfume is made of poppy flower, and she was very friendly with a member of the cartel.

When Kay learns of this, she wisely says that she was the only one with the perfume, so the killer couldn’t have had it. Again, Castle’s expression: priceless.

Kay tells Castle that Reggie, her boyfriend, had insisted that she use Francisco to train Lolita. Reggie notices Castle eyeing him and tries to make a run for it but is stopped by Royal. Reggie was trying to help the cartel by spying on Francisco’s operation, but when that didn’t work, he confronted and killed him.

Kay adopts Royal, and they live happily ever after. Well, I assume so; who wouldn’t be happy with Royal?

Cutest moment: Castle shows Beckett how to soothe Royal when Castle and Beckett decide to share custody of the adorable dog.

Review:

Royal stole the show! If this episode was an ad for adopting a pup, I’m sold. Hilarie Burton was adorably clueless as Kay Cappuccio, and any show that wants to make fun of talentless reality stars is ok in my book!

I noticed the absence of Captain Gates this week. I’m pretty sure she would have been against the precinct adopting Royal as a mascot.

And when will Jason Bateman guest star?! This is the second(?) reference to him. Please, Jason!

Can’t wait for the next ep, on Monday, February 6, on ABC at 10/9c.
