Yesterday, I guest-hosted another episode of the TV Times Three Podcast. This time, we discussed all of the upcoming summer premieres – new and returning shows. It’s kind of overwhelming how much new TV is coming in the next few weeks. I need a break… I still have some stuff on the TiVo from the last month and was actually kind of enjoying this calm before the new TV onslaught. Read on to find out what we are recommending on this relatively light night of new TV.
Tonight, the culinary world tour of Around the World in 80 Plates heads to Africa. Last week, the chefs were in Spain. First, they had a footrace to determine teams – which ended up being Nookie and girls versus the rest of the guys. Then the two teams raced to filet and pack as much fish and squid ink they could to see who would earn the special advantage. The guys won the red prawns for their meal, but they wasted it in a terrible hot/cold dish. In the end, the women’s team won by two customer votes, and Nookie was named MVP.
Throughout the competition, Chef Keven (“Cheven”) seemed to have a knack for getting on his teammates nerves. This finally caught up with him as he was the chef sent packing last week. I was thrilled to see him go – when you know your teammates are the ones voting, why would you continue to be an annoying jerk?! I’ve really been enjoying this cross between a strategy-based reality competition show and a typical cooking competition reality show. Some of these contestants need to realize soon that they need a strategy and not just rely on skill, or they will be the next to go.
In tonight’s episode, “In and Out of Africa,” the chefs descend on Marrakech. Drama comes at a high boil due to a perilous trip, missing ingredients, and accusations of sabotage in the kitchen. The chefs also serve up a local favorite called tagine.

Tonight, I’ll also be watching Melissa & Joey and Total Blackout.

The last season of Melissa & Joey ended with Mel & Joe kind of realizing they felt something for one another, but nothing happened between the two of them…except the bathtub falling through the living room ceiling! lol Lennox went to a school dance, and Mel & Joe had to have a bit of “the talk” with her when Mel saw Lennox’s date buying condoms at the drugstore beforehand. Also, Ryder finally stood up to his crazy bossy (& just plain crazy!) girlfriend, Holly. Then, Joe came into some money from his old employer, and he debated leaving his “manny” job. Fortunately, that won’t happen – especially with the tub now in the living room. 😉 LOL
On tonight’s season premiere, “I Can Manage,” Mel is feeling the pressure of balancing the massive home renovation with her duties at work. Determined to have the house fixed as quickly as possible, Joe convinces a reluctant Mel to put him in charge of the construction. But Joe’s management style only makes things worse. Meanwhile, Lennox is thrilled when her school wants to put on her original play, but the reaction is not quite what she had hoped. Joel McKinnon Miller (Big Love) guest stars.
Then on the second episode, “If You Can’t Stand the Heat,” Mel is charmed by her “cabinet guy,” but is less charmed by Joe’s reaction to him, leading them to a fight about being too involved in each other’s lives. However, their decision to give each other privacy does not turn out as planned. And Lennox is horrified at being appointed to her school’s “spirit committee,” until she meets the club’s president. Joel McKinnon Miller, Cody Linley (Hannah Montana), & Bren Foster (Days of Our Lives) guest star.
Check them out tonight on ABC Family at 8/7c & 8:30/7:30c. Learn where to find episodes online of Melissa & Joey @ Clicker.
