I don’t know about you, but I have this ominous Game of Thrones-style “Fall is Coming” mantra looming over me. So much great new TV is coming that I don’t know how I’m going to either record or watch it all! I almost broke down and purchased a new four-tuner TiVo yesterday, though I think the purchase is inevitable and a Labor Day sale at Best Buy would push me over the edge. 🙂 Right now, I’m just trying to enjoy the calm before the storm, and tonight is really calm. Read on to find out what we recommend you check out tonight.
Friday nights just got a little more action-packed with the return of Strike Back on Cinemax. In the series, cocky ex-Delta Force operative Damien Scott is teamed with Royale Marine and former SBS commando Michael Stonebridge as part of a top secret branch of MI6 called Section 20. Scott is a ladies man who seems to always be in flagrante when a new mission arises (or even mid-mission), while his partner, Stonebridge, is more by-the-book and married to a woman who’s pressuring him to take a desk job and start a family. Last season, the guys were on a season-long hunt for an international criminal named Latif who killed one of their own. In the end, Latif was captured and killed, but in the process, they lost both colleague Captain Kate Marshall (with whom Stonebridge was having an affair) and Colonel Eleanor Grant. With a severe lack of female characters (besides Scott’s constant companions) at the end of last season, this season they are adding Rhona Mitra to the cast as Captain Rachel Dalton, who takes over as head of Section 20.
Strike Back is so much fun—each season is comprised of 5 two-part stories, with an overriding season-long arc. This makes each pair of episodes feel like its own buddy action flick. Strike Back has over-the-top action, great locales, interesting and complex plots, and mixes in a lot of fun moments, as well. I may find it a bit odd that they have an American playing a Brit and an Australian playing an American, but these two guys work really well together. It will be interesting to see their chemistry with the new Colonel—I really liked the character of Colonel Grant and was sad to see her sacrifice herself for the mission. I can’t wait for the new missions to start tonight—a show on Cinemax really shouldn’t be this good, but it is!
In tonight’s double-episode premiere, Scott heads to Kenya to facilitate the transfer of a Libyan seeking asylum, but he winds up in the middle of a kidnap plot that lands himself and three hostages in the hands of a warlord in Mogadishu. Meanwhile, Stonebridge is training Section 20 recruits in the United Kingdom, where he’s forced to deal with one trainee who’s become unstable.

Tonight, I think you should be tuning in to watch Teachers Rock on CBS, where Carrie Underwood, Dierks Bentley, Fun, Josh Groban, and others will perform to honor teachers and education. They will honor America’s educators with presentations and songs by some of the biggest stars from the music business and Hollywood.
The Teachers Rock concert will feature scenes from the upcoming movie Won’t Back Down, starring Academy Award nominees Viola Davis and Maggie Gyllenhaal as two determined mothers, one of whom is a teacher who will stop at nothing to transform their children’s failing inner-city school. Facing a powerful and entrenched bureaucracy, they risk everything to make a difference in the education and future of their children.
To watch and show your support for education, tune in to CBS at 8/7c.
