This Week on TV – 3/9/14-3/15/14

Welcome to a new week of TV! I love all the new TV on this week, although some of my favorites (Castle, NCIS/NCIS: LA) are missing. Bones returns on Monday this week, though, so that’s excellent. 🙂

Tonight is the series premiere of Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey on FOX at 9/8c. More than three decades after the debut of Cosmos: A Personal Voyage, Carl Sagan’s stunning and iconic exploration of the universe as revealed by science, Seth MacFarlane has teamed with Sagan’s original creative collaborators – writer/executive producer Druyan and co-writer, astronomer Steven Soter – to conceive the 13-part series that will serve as a successor to the Emmy and Peabody Award-winning original series. Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey is hosted by renowned astrophysicist Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson. As with the legendary original series, the new Cosmos is the saga of how we discovered the laws of nature and found our coordinates in space and time. The series brings to life never-before-told stories of the heroic quest for knowledge, transporting viewers to new worlds and across the universe for a vision of the cosmos on the grandest – and the smallest – scale.

Tonight is also the series premiere of Resurrection on ABC at 9/8c. The people of Arcadia, Missouri, are forever changed when their deceased loved ones suddenly start to reappear. An 8-year-old American boy (Landon Gimenez) wakes up alone in a rice paddy in a rural Chinese province with no idea how he got there. Details start to emerge when the boy, who calls himself Jacob, recalls that his hometown is Arcadia, and an Immigration agent, J. Martin Bellamy (Omar Epps), takes him there. The home he claims as his own is occupied by an elderly couple, Henry (Kurtwood Smith) and Lucille Langston (Frances Fisher), who lost their son, Jacob, more than 30 years ago. While they look different, young Jacob recognizes them as his parents. Those closest to the family try to unravel this impossible mystery, including Sheriff Fred Langston (Matt Craven), whose wife Barbara, drowned 30 years ago while trying to save Jacob. But this boy, who claims to be the deceased Jacob, knows secrets about his own death that no one else knows — secrets that Fred’s daughter, Maggie Langston (Devin Kelly), will begin to investigate and discover to be true. The show stars Omar Epps (House), Matt Craven (Crimson Tide, A Few Good Men), Devin Kelley (The Chicago Code), Frances Fisher (Titanic), Kurtwood Smith (That ’70s Show), Sam Hazeldine (The Raven), Samaire Armstrong (Entourage, The O.C.), Mark Hildreth (Dragon Ball Z), and Landon Gimenez.

Tonight is also the series premiere of Catch a Contractor on Spike TV at 10/9c, followed by a 2nd new episode at 10:30/9:30c. Each year, millions of Americans set out to renovate their property in hopes of finally achieving their dream home. Sadly, thousands of these unsuspecting homeowners instead become victims, duped and abandoned by the contractors they trusted their savings to and left with either unfinished or danger-laden, uninhabitable homes due to poor craftsmanship. Host and master carpenter Adam Carolla and his team, consisting of no-nonsense, expert contractor Skip Bedell and his wife, private investigator Alison Bedell, are on a mission to track down these shady, evasive contractors and drag them back to the scene of the crime to face the music and fix the disasters they left behind. Home improvement scams have consistently ranked in the Better Business Bureau’s top 10 consumer cons. Carolla, who spent 10 years working in construction before his successful career in radio and television, takes this issue very personally. As a passionate master carpenter who has built hundreds of homes including his own, he not only has a keen eye when it comes to identifying shoddy, inferior work, but loathes seeing trusting and naïve average citizens getting scammed by subpar contractors and left holding the proverbial bag.

The fourth series premiere tonight is My Five Wives on TLC at 10/9c. The show follows Brady Williams, his five wives, and their combined 24 children, who all live together on their large family property outside of Salt Lake City, Utah. Each one-hour episode offers a candid look at a controversial lifestyle and goes behind closed doors to share an intimate portrait of this big, loving, progressive family. From dealing with everyday issues like maintaining a strong marriage and raising children to more complicated issues such as jealousy, loneliness and their schedules with Brady, nothing is off-limits. An independent plural family, the Williams gradually withdrew from the fundamentalist Mormon Church after reevaluating their core beliefs. Believing in equality for everyone and a God who loves and accepts all, they emphasize that their choice to be together is “about love, commitment and happiness as a family” rather than religious doctrine. Though their beliefs and their decision to leave the church have led them to be shunned by their community and estranged from many family members, the Williams’ believe their sacrifices are worth it.

The fifth series premiere tonight is No Man’s Land on History Channel at 10/9c. This new series transports viewers into the lives of those who thrive and survive in the barren landscape that marks the end of civilization: the great American desert. It takes a special breed to make the desert their home, but these men brave the crippling heat, stealthy predators and volatile weather – in order to live on their own terms. In one of the most hostile environments on Earth, danger is a way of life, but the desert also offers freedom, independence and escape from the work-a-day world. The show follows five hardcore men who live off the land and prove that survival here requires ingenuity, grit and self-reliance.

Finally, the last series premiere tonight is Online Dating Rituals of the American Male on Bravo at 10/9c. Bravo unmasks the world of the booming online dating culture from the male perspective. Each week, the show follows two men as they hunt for their ideal partner (or fling!). Viewers will get an inside look at the male psyche from the beginning stages of trolling and communicating online to landing a date with a potential match. The series features a variety of men from the typical “romantic” searching for his one true love to the guy whose goal is strictly getting lucky. From earnest romance to cringe-worthy moments, viewers will get a taste of the trials and tribulations that come along with dating in the digital age.

Tonight is the series premiere of Believe on NBC at 10/9c. Levitation, telekinesis, the ability to control nature and even predict the future… Since she was 2 years old, Bo (Johnny Sequoyah) has had gifts she could neither fully understand, nor control. Raised by a small group known as the “True Believers,” the orphaned girl has been safeguarded from harmful outsiders who would use her forces for personal gain. But now that she is 10, her powers have become stronger and the threat has grown more dangerous. With her life and future now in jeopardy, the “Believers” turn to the only person they see fit to be her full-time protector. That is, once they break him out of jail. Tate (Jake McLaughlin), a wrongfully imprisoned death row inmate who’s lost his will, is initially reluctant until he witnesses one of her extraordinary abilities. Bo sees people for who they truly are…and who they may become. Tate and Bo begin their journey, one in which trust must be earned. Traveling from city to city, every place they stop and everyone they meet will be changed forever. But they’ll have to keep going to stay one step ahead of the sinister forces after Bo’s power… because it will take a miracle to keep them safe forever. “Believe” also stars Delroy Lindo and Kyle MacLachlan.
