If We Controlled Your Remote… 6/8/14

Ahh, Sunday. Friend or foe, your choice. For me, it’s both a blessing and a curse, especially this week. My husband had last week off for vacation, so he goes back to work today (boo!), but there’s a lot of great TV on this week, starting tonight (yay!), so… What about you? For now, check out what we’re recommending you watch tonight!

Jenny’s Choice #1

thebigtipsmallMy first pick tonight is a Food Network special, called The Big Tip with Rachael Ray. Tonight is a sneak preview of a new show hosted by Rachael, which will air this coming fall. In this brand-new series, Rachael will travel to one town each episode and meet three incredibly hardworking people who have been serving as waiters and waitresses for years. Each of these deserving individuals will receive a life-changing tip — but only one of them will receive the big tip.

I love the idea of this show because too often, servers — even hardworking ones — go unnoticed and under-appreciated. Years ago, when my family and I lived in the small town of Garden City in the southwest corner of Kansas, there was a cheap, family-style restaurant (think a step down from Applebee’s or Chili’s, but a sit-down place, not fast food) that I loved to go to. The food was good, not great, and the prices were cheap, but not quite McDonald’s. But there was one waitress there who was always friendly, always had a smile on her face, was always efficient, and always got my order right (and if you knew me, you would know I tend to place the most complicated orders in the history of dining out: no sauce, light sauce, extra sauce, sauce on the side, no lettuce, etc etc. LOL). I’d love to imagine others like her who get noticed by Rachael’s show and rewarded for the extra effort they put into their jobs.

On tonight’s episode, “Serving Up Big Tips,” Rachael Ray and Rossi Morreale travel throughout America on a mission to give life-changing tips to deserving waiters and waitresses, meeting a foster mother studying for the ministry, a woman who volunteers, and a waitress who has a dog rescue.

Catch the show tonight on Food Network at 10/9c.

Megan’s Choice

dropdeaddiva69smallIt’s been quite the season on Drop Dead Diva so far, and I am not entirely sure I’m happy with where it’s gone. I was happy that Grayson and Jane were finally together with the truth out in the open, and then Grayson had to go and get shot. Last week, Fred was Grayson’s angel at the gate, but Grayson begged him to be returned so he could be with Jane. Fred decided he owed it to Jane, and off Grayson went…into the body of a criminal. Imagine the shock when Jane gets a call from an inmate who says he is Grayson and he hit the return button. How complicated is that love affair going to be? Honestly, I wish they would have just left things well enough alone for the rest of this season, seeing as it’s the show’s last, but we can hope they have a master plan that we are all going to love.

On tonight’s episode, “Afterlife,” after a shocking discovery, Jane reopens the case of a man on death row in order to prove his innocence. Kim represents a small dance company that helps inner city kids after their routines are stolen by an international pop star. Owen has wedding anxiety.

To see what happens in the world of Jane and Grayson, tune in to Lifetime tonight at 9/8c.

I’ll also be watching Game of Thrones, Enlisted, Guy’s Grocery Games, Food Network Star, and The Hunt.

Kyle’s Choice

gameofthrones69smallWow. A lot happened on last week’s Game of Thrones! First, the Wildlings made their way even closer to the Wall, completely massacring the townsfolk of Moles Town—though Ygritte spared the lives of Gilly and her baby. Meanwhile, in the Vale, while being questioned about the death of her aunt, Sansa lied about what happened in order to protect Lord Baelish. And just outside, Arya and The Hound finally arrived at the gate, only to learn of Lysa’s death. Arya just broke out into laughter at the news, unaware that her sister was just yards away.

The most devastating part of last week’s episode was the fight between The Mountain and Oberyn Martell. It looked like Oberyn pretty much had it in the bag, but before he would strike the final blow, he went all Inigo Montoya‎, repeatedly chanting: “You raped my sister, you murdered her, and you killed her children,” demanding The Mountain confess to his crimes. However, The Mountain used this delay to turn things around, and in one of the show’s most gruesome scenes to date, knocked out Oberyn’s teeth, jammed his fingers into his eye sockets, and crushed Oberyn’s head until it exploded. At that point, Tyrion was sentenced to death.

Ghaaaa. I couldn’t move for a good 15 minutes after last week’s episode ended! I was so disappointed that Oberyn didn’t just finish the deed when he could. I don’t see how Tyrion could possibly reverse his fate, and I’ve finally come to accept that that he will, in fact, be executed—if not tonight, then in the season finale! My final hope lies in Arya to be the one who claims the Iron Throne from the Lannisters! Will Arya reunite with her sister tonight? Will the Wildlings finally make it to the Wall, and can the Night’s Watch hold them off while being severely outnumbered?!

On tonight’s episode, “The Watchers on the Wall,” the Night’s Watch are confronted with the most dangerous challenge to the Wall ever seen.

See the drama in tonight’s penultimate episode on HBO at 9/8c.

I’ll also be watching/recording The 68th Annual Tony Awards, Enlisted, Guy’s Grocery Games, Food Network Star, Halt and Catch Fire, Drop Dead Diva, Devious Maids, Veep, and Penny Dreadful.

Jenny’s Choice #2

brothervsbrothersmallI love Jonathan and Drew Scott (the titular brothers from Property Brothers). I love design competition shows. Put the two together, and you’ve got Brother vs Brother. Each of the men lead a team of designers in a selection of challenges, and each week, at least one designer goes home. In the end, a designer wins, but so does the brother whose team he/she is on. Last season, Drew (known on Property Brothers as the real estate guy, not the builder) took home the win. I hope Jonathan can pull it off this year, but really, it’ll be fun either way!

On tonight’s episode, “Season 2 Ranch Rematch,” the first challenge of the season involves the teams fixing up ranch houses.

See how the renos go tonight on HGTV at 9/8c.

I’ll also be watching/DVRing Enlisted, Guy’s Grocery Games, Signed Sealed Delivered, Food Network Star, Hungry Investors, & Salem.
