celebrityfamilyfeudsmallMy first pick tonight is the season premiere of Celebrity Family Feud. The regular version of this show is one my son and I love watching together, especially the ones with current host, Steve Harvey, and the long-ago Richard Dawson. The celebrity edition first aired back in 2008, and tonight’s it’s back for a new round. It will feature two celebrities competing against one another with their families to win money for their favorite charity. We’ll get two episodes a night for three weeks.

Tonight’s two games feature Anthony Anderson (black-ish) and his family – mother Doris, brother Derrick, Aunt Denise, & sister-in-law Carol – versus Toni Braxton (7-time Grammy Award-winning artist) and her sisters – Tamar, Trina, Towanda, & Traci. That will be followed by Monica Potter (Parenthood) and her family – mother Nancy, and sisters Jessica, Brigette, & Kerry – versus Curtis Stone (Australian celebrity chef) and his – wife Lindsay Price (Eastick, Lipstick Jungle) and Lindsay’s father Bill, mother Diane, & brother Bryan.

To see which teams of celebrities and their families take home the prize for their charities, tune in to ABC at 8/7c.

thebrink621smallTonight, HBO kicks off an all-new Sunday night lineup with the return of True Detective and the premieres of two new comedies. While Ballers has the star power of the Rock, I’m actually more excited to check out the new political dark comedy The Brink. The series stars Tim Robbins as Secretary of State Walter Larsen, who suddenly finds himself trying to prevent World War III from breaking out. Assisting him in this task are bumbling low-level Islamabad embassy worker Alex Talbot (Jack Black) and slightly crazy Navy fighter pilot Zeke Tilson (Pablo Schreiber, Orange is the New Black). The show also stars Aasif Mandvi (Jericho), Maribeth Monroe (Workaholics), Carla Gugino (Wayward Pines), and Eric Ladin (The Killing).

Based solely on the trailer, I think this show looks like it’s going to be a lot of fun. Plus I’ve really enjoyed this talented cast in other comedies. And with the political nature of the series, I think it should work well in Veep’s former timeslot. HBO has wasted no time in getting another stellar lineup going after last week’s finales!

On tonight’s episode, “Pilot,” in the premiere of this black comedy about a military coup in Pakistan, an unlikely trio try to prevent World War III: the U.S. secretary of state in Washington, D.C.; a low-level diplomat in Islamabad; and a stressed-out Navy fighter pilot on an aircraft carrier in the Red Sea.

See if this new dark comedy is for tonight on HBO at 10:30/9:30c.

battlebotssmallBattleBots, starting tonight on ABC, isn’t a new concept. In fact, I’ve seen it done a couple of times before now. But I’m so excited about tonight’s premiere because it’s been a while and it’s always entertaining. If you haven’t heard of or seen this premise before, basically it’s homemade robots fighting one another to the death, so to speak. Eight teams – which range from NASA engineers to teenage students – will build robots with everything from saws to hammers with the specific goal of claiming the title and the cash prize. Veteran sports broadcaster Chris Rose will give expert play-by-play analysis, while former UFC fighter Kenny Florian will chime in with color commentary. The two sideline reporters are Allison Haislep and NASA engineer Bobak Ferdowsi, and Faruq Tauheed will serve as ring announcer. Finally, the judges for each battle are: former BattleBots competitor and special effects artist Fon Davis; NASA astronaut Leland Melvin; and the face of Nerdist, Jessica Chobot.

On tonight’s episode, “Episode 101,” eight teams will converge in an arena of minefield and hazards for the ultimate shot at glory during the Qualifiers round. Each match will consist of a single three-minute bout in which the goal is to completely destroy or disable the opponent. If there is no knockout during the three-minute battle, the panel of judges will declare a victor to move onto the next round.

See which robot comes out on top tonight on ABC at 9/8c.

I’ll also be watching/DVRing Guy’s Grocery Games, Food Network Star, Catch a Contractor, & Cutthroat Kitchen.

thelastship621smallTonight, I’m also looking forward to the return of The Last Ship. In the first season, the naval ship Nathan James was out in the Arctic when a virus broke out and wiped out a huge portion on the world’s population. Aboard the ship was Dr. Rachel Scott, who managed to develop a vaccine and cure. So the ship headed back home and went ashore in Baltimore, where they met with Amy Granderson, the woman in charge of what was left of society (and mother to a lieutenant on the ship). They soon discovered that there was unrest in the city, caused by warlord Thorwald, who doesn’t agree with the way the government is running things and was trying to stop people from heading to the so-called haven known as Olympia. Commander Tom Chandler and Lt. Carlton Burk headed to Olympia to look for their loved ones, but once they arrived, they learned the truth about what’s really happening. Granderson had control of all of the local law enforcement and was herding the infected to Olympia to give them a fake, lethal “vaccine.” The bodies were then burned to power the city for those who were deemed worthy for the real vaccine. Tom tried to hail the crew still aboard the Nathan James, but it was too late – Norris had already taken the ship, shot Quincy (who was bleeding out), and was holding the rest of the crew at gunpoint.

How is Tom going to get his ship back? Is Thorwald actually the good guy, and will Tom team up with him? If Tom does get the ship back, what’s his next move to synthesize and distribute the cure? And what other threats lie ahead for the crew of the Nathan James? And finally, is Tom’s wife really dead, or will he finally get to reunite with her?

On tonight’s episode, “Unreal City,” season 2 opens with the fractured team joining together with an underground resistance. Meanwhile, an imprisoned Rachel tries to help the sick as doses of the cure run low.

To learn what happens to the survivors on the Nathan James, tune in to the 2-hour premiere on TNT at 9/8c.

I’ll also be watching/recording Celebrity Family Feud, BattleBots, American Odyssey, Food Network Star, Halt and Catch Fire, True Detective, Ballers, and Nurse Jackie.
