With the new year approaching, the Winter TV season is finally upon us, and there are lots of new and returning shows about to premiere. Tonight FOX launches the fun new mystery singing competition series, The Masked Singer.

I had stopped watched these singing competition series a while back, but The Masked Singer provides a fun new twist on the genre. If you saw the YouTube clip of Ryan Reynolds dressed as a unicorn signing on a Korean TV show last year, this is the same show but for US audiences. The series finds 12 celebrities hiding their identities under full-body costumes as they take the stage to sing incognito before a live audience. All told, the 12 celebrity competitors have amassed 65 Grammy nominations, 16 multi-Platinum albums, 16 Emmy nominations, nine Broadway shows, four stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and four Super Bowl titles! Each week some of the contestants will participate in head-to-head sing-offs. The studio audience and judges will vote, and at the end of the night, one of the singers will be eliminated and reveal his or her identity. Hosting the series is Nick Cannon, and the judging panel includes Robin Thicke, Jenny McCarthy, Ken Jeong, and Nicole Scherzinger.

I really enjoyed tonight’s premiere. As each masked singer is introduced, they give some clues to help you try to identify them. The judges also ask each contestant a question or two and make their own guesses. When the contestants are interviewed, their voices are distorted, but it’s fun to try to figure out who these singers are based on the clues, their mannerisms, their singing voices, etc. It’s obvious that some of these folks have a lot of experience singing/performing, while others not-so-much. My screeners for the first two episodes were blurred and bleeped during the big reveals, so I am really excited to check out tonight’s episode to learn the identity of one of these celebrities! In tonight’s episode, we meet half of the contestants, and next week we meet the second half.

On tonight’s premiere, “Mask On Face Off,” the first six undercover celebrity singers – peacock, hippo, monster, unicorn, deer and lion – face off against one another in elaborate head-to-toe costumes.

Check out the wildly fun competition tonight on FOX at 9/8c.

I’ll also be watching/recording MythBusters Jr.

Last week’s Vikings started with Ivar disposing of the Seer’s body after he murdered him. Despite his efforts to hide his misdeed, his brother Hvitserk was onto him. With the armies of King Harald finally nearly upon Essex, King Alfred caved and agreed to give to Lagertha, Bjorn, and the other vikings in their custody land promised long ago – if they defeated Harald for him. Ivar was really pushing the limits of claiming to be a god, but the city of Kattegat seemed behind it so far. Hvitserk, however, not so much. In England, the Bishop Heahmund renounced his love for Lagertha because of a vision he saw of hell. She cursed him and accused him of having never really loved her.

While the king and vikings departed to go intercept the approaching army of Harald, Queen Judith tortured a supposed traitor for more of his co-conspirators’ names. He said he was innocent, and I believed him. Ubbe met with Harald to make parlay. Harald invited them to switch sides, but Ubbe declined, citing his new Christianity. The next day, a British bastard child of Ragnar’s showed up in King Harald’s camp, warning of Ubbe’s treachery. They were not coming back for a second parlay. They had already circled their flank and were ready to attack! By the time Harald’s army got to the battlefield, the Saxons had burnt much of the terrain. They then li the remaining tree-line to force the vikings to hold lower ground as they attacked. Part of the advantage also came from catapulting Ubbe taught them to make.

During this epic battle, King Alfred iwas saved from death by his brother, but Heahmund died when an errant arrow goes through his chest. As he fell to his knees, his death knell was spent screaming Lagertha’s name. Maybe he really did love her.. Also in this battle, Bjorn got a nice eye scar from a tall viking woman, whom he then kept as his captive. Soon Harald had called for a retreat. Later, after Heahmund was buried with his sword, Lagertha was still nowhere to be found. Returning from the battle, King Alfred faced his mother’s conspiracy, which was now turned against Aethelred. Back in Kattegat, we saw what a fool Ivar was for love and were forced to wonder how the hell his wife was pregnant when we know he’s impotent. Hmmmmm…

On tonight’s episode, “The Buddha,” Bjorn achieves one of Ragnar’s dreams; Ivar hatches a new plan in Kattegat, while preparing for a divine arrival; a settler in Iceland returns in a terrible state; King Alfred faces his greatest threat yet.

Learn about Ragnar’s dream, Ivar’s plan, and more tonight on History Channel at 9/8c.

I hope everyone had a great holiday season, but while I enjoyed having family time…I am very happy that January means new episodes of my favorite shows. Criminal Minds left off before Christmas with Prentiss just starting a relationship with the very sexy Agent Mendoza, whom she had met on a case. I’m very happy that the writers are giving Prentiss a love interest, and hopefully it’ll help to open her up even more as a character.

On tonight’s episode, “Night Lights,” the BAU team heads to Portland, Ore., to investigate a chilling abduction that may be linked to a local couple killed in their home a week earlier.

To see what kind of disturbing Unsub the team needs to deal with this week, tune in to CBS at 10/9c.

I’ll also be watching SEAL Team, Gordon Ramsay’s 24 Hours to Hell and Back, The Masked Singer, and Guy’s Grocery Games.
