Jenny’s Choice
I’m always leery of new dramas if they aren’t procedurals, because I have such strict guidelines on what I like and dislike. So when I first heard about USA Network’s latest, Complications, I figured I’d give it a shot, especially since I was such a huge fan of Burn Notice (which was created by Matt Nix, who created this as well), but I honestly wasn’t expecting to enjoy it enough to continue. I’ve watched the first two episodes (the two that are airing tonight), and I loved it so far. There’s lots of exciting drama and tension and a ton of emotion that made my heart clench. Jason O’Mara stars as John Ellison, an ER doctor, who intervenes in a drive-by shooting and saves a little boy’s life. But things escalate quickly when he learns that the boy is a gang leader’s son and now he’s expected to keep the boy alive as the rival gang tries yet again to kill him. The series also stars Jessica Szohr as ER nurse Gretchen Polk (whose character has great chemistry with Ellison, who is – unfortunately, in my opinion. LOL – married), Beth Riesfraf (loved her in Leverage) as Samantha Ellison (John’s wife), and Lauren Stamile (a stick-in-the-mud, rigid ER doctor).
On tonight’s double episodes, “Pilot/Infection,†disillusioned ER doctor John Ellison finds his existence transformed when he intervenes in a drive-by shooting, saving a young boy’s life. When he learns the boy is still marked for death, John is compelled to keep him alive. In part 2, when Antoine disappears from his hospital bed, John must find him quickly or face the consequences of losing a gang leader’s son. ER nurse Gretchen Polk tries to convince a combative patient to lie about her medical condition in order to keep John clear of their supervisor’s suspicions.

Tonight, ABC kicks off their new 10-episode series The Astronaut Wives Club. The series is based off of the hit book by Lily Koppel and explores the lives of the women married to the first US astronauts – Betty Grissom (JoAnna Garcia Swisher, Better With You), Rene Carpenter (Yvonne Strahovski, Chuck, Dexter), Louise Shepard (Dominique McElligott, Hell on Wheels), Trudy Cooper (Odette Annable, Breaking In), Marge Slayton (Erin Cummings, Spartacus: Blood and Sand), Annie Glenn (Azure Parsons, Salem), and Jo Schirra (Zoe Boyle, Downton Abbey).
It’s the early 1960s, and the race is on between the US and Soviets to see who can put the first man in space. The Soviets have already sent a dog into space, and the US space program needs some good PR, so they hire a reporter from Life magazine to tell the story of the wives of the seven astronauts training to make the history books. Almost overnight, the women become celebrities, like American royalty. While at first they enjoy the fame, the harsh realities of the dangerous missions that lie ahead for their husbands soon become apparent. As the women face struggles in their relationships, they must learn to put on a brave face for the cameras and learn to rely on one another for support.
I enjoyed tonight’s premiere – it’s a nice period drama with a great cast and kind of reminded me of ABC’s old series Pan Am. While I recognize the names of some of these astronauts, I don’t really know much about the early space program, so I’m looking forward to learning a bit of history with the drama.
On tonight’s episode, “Launch,” the women are transformed and forever bonded when their husbands are chosen to be the first Americans in space.

Megan’s Choice
Tonight is the season premiere of ABC’s sexy summer drama, Mistresses, and it’s always an entertaining ride. When we left the ladies at the end of last season, Savi stumbled across Joss and Harry getting intimate on the beach. Nothing says family drama like sleeping with your sister’s ex-husband. I guess we can be sure that Joss’s wedding is off now. Karen finally found out she is HIV negative, but they left us hanging with something more in her blood work that hopefully we’ll find out in the premiere. I really enjoy Karen because when she goes off course, it’s a complete train wreck. This season is bound to keep us all on the edges of our seats or at least make us need a cold shower.
On tonight’s first episode, “Gone Girl,” the drama begins with the bride-to-be in the arms of another man. Having confessed their true feelings, Joss and Harry are making out on the beach when Karen calls with bad news and Joss races to be with Scott. Meanwhile, April invites her half-brother Scotty and his mother to town, and they arrive with Uncle Marc in tow. Karen makes a return visit to her doctor, Alec, and the results of her blood test are about to change her life in a very dramatic way. Fashion designer Calista Raines arrives on the scene determined to get what she wants. Then on “I’ll Be Watching You,†as new friendships are forged, relationships are set on a complicated course and mysterious plans are set in motion.
