childhoodsend1214smallTonight, Syfy kicks off its 3-night miniseries event, Childhood’s End, which is an adaption of Arthur C. Clark’s 1953 novel of the same name. Mysterious alien ships belonging to a race known as the Overlords appear in the sky all around the globe. However, the unseen supervisor known as Karellen (Charles Dance, Game of Thrones) promises they are there peacefully and promise to help fix the Earth’s problems. Karellen chooses Missouri farmer Ricky (Mike Vogel, Under the Dome) to be his “Blue Collar Prophet” and bridge between humans and the Overlords. The Overlords waste no time turning the Earth into the utopia they promised – achieving world peace, ending hunger, curing disease, etc. But is all of this too good to be true? Some freedom fighters believe so and don’t trust Karellen – especially since he won’t reveal himself to them.

The original novel was broken into three parts, with a time jump in between each one. Syfy is following the same structure with this series. Each night can be thought of as a 2-hour film in an overall saga. I had never read the original novel but have seen the entire series, and I would say expect the unexpected. The series has some really shocking and creepy moments (usually in the closing moments of each episode) and also brings up some thought-provoking topics.

The series also stars Julian McMahon (Nip/Tuck), Yael Stone (Orange is the New Black), Daisy Betts (Persons Unknown), Ashley Zuckerman (Manhattan), Osy Ikhile (The Fear), Charlotte Nicdao (Please Like Me), and Haley Magnus (Home and Away).

I had the opportunity to speak with some of the cast/creators of the miniseries at San Diego Comic-Con. You can find videos of these interviews at NoReruns.net.

On tonight’s premiere, “Night One – The Overlords,” an alien presence arrives on Earth with the intention to end all suffering and guide humanity into a utopia. But not everyone is so quick to believe these mysterious visitors are as peaceful as they seem.

Catch the beginning of this 3-part special series tonight on Syfy at 8/7c.

ncisla1214smallLast week’s NCIS: LA was all about Deeks and the internal affairs investigation. He was accused of killing his former partner, who was a dirty cop. We ended up learning that Deeks did indeed kill him in defense of the prostitute who was Deeks’s informant. The team had to fight off another dirty cop – who’d been partnered with the dead cop until the force split them up and paired Deeks with the one he killed – who was hell bent on finding his and his old partner’s stash. Of course it all worked out. They set up the dirty cop and Deeks got away clean. He had a conversation with Hetty, who knows Deeks did indeed kill his former partner, and now he has to decide whether or not to confess to Kensi.

So should he? I think so. I think Kensi probably suspects it. And he killed for a good reason, in defense of an innocent person. So I’m sure she would understand. One thing I wished had happened was that Deeks had finally signed and turned in the paperwork to become an NCIS agent. Now that this story line has wrapped up, isn’t it way past time?! But tonight is the fall finale, and I don’t know if we’ll see either of those things – Deeks confessing to Kensi and Deeks becoming a real agent – happen.

On tonight’s episode, “Cancel Christmas,” when a suspected North Korean spy is poisoned and hit by a truck carrying Christmas trees, the team must search for who is responsible for smuggling spies into the country. Also, Deeks and Kensi try to find a way to include their mothers in their Christmas plans, and Hetty notices that Granger isn’t feeling the holiday cheer. Lenny Jacobson guest stars.

See if the team can find the bad guys in time to celebrate Christmas tonight on CBS at 9:59/8:59c.

I’ll also be watching/DVRing The Great Christmas Light Fight, Cake Wars, Major Crimes, Scorpion, & The Great Holiday Baking Show.

theexpanse1214smallTonight, Syfy is also kicking off its new series The Expanse with a special 2-night event (episodes will follow Childhood’s End both tonight and tomorrow night). The series is an adaptation of the bestselling novels by James S. A. Corey and is set in the 23rd century, when humanity has colonized the Solar System, the U.N. controls the Earth, and Mars is an independent military power. Resources are scarce, and the tensions are at an all-time high between Earth and Mars over the control of the Asteroid Belt’s Ceres station and among the Belters who live and work there.

Tonight’s premiere introduces us to this exciting new world by jumping right into two concurrent storylines. The ice hauler Canterbury, which supplies the water for the residents of the Asteroid Belt, gets a distress call from a derelict ship, and the crew decides to check it out. Heading up the mission are second officer Jim Holden (Steven Strait, Magic City), pilot Alex (Cas Anvar, Olympus), chief engineer Naomi (Dominique Tipper, Vampire Academy), mechanic Amos (Wes Chatham, The Hunger Games, The Unit), and med-tech Shed (Paulo Constanzo, Royal Pains). Meanwhile, police detective Miller (Thomas Jane, Hung) looks into the kidnapping of an heiress (Florence Faivre, The Following).

The series cast also includes Shohreh Aghdashloo (House of Sand and Fog, 24), Chad L. Coleman (The Walking Dead), and Jared Harris (Mad Men).

Syfy had made tonight’s premiere available a few weeks ago on various streaming and download platforms, but if you haven’t seen it yet, be sure to check it out tonight before the second all-new episode airs tomorrow night. I’m glad Syfy isn’t waiting a whole week for the second episode, because the premiere definitely left me excited to see what happens next! It looks like this could be Syfy’s next huge series, like Battlestar Gallactica, and I’m looking forward to checking out more of this show!

I had the opportunity to speak with some of the cast/creators of the series at San Diego Comic-Con. You can find videos of these interviews at NoReruns.net.

On tonight’s premiere, “Dulcinea,” a hardened detective begins an off-the-book investigation of a missing heiress in the series premiere of this futuristic thriller; at the same time, the captain of the ice-freighter Canterbury inquires into a distress call from a mysterious derelict ship.

Check out the series premiere tonight on Syfy at 10/9c.

I’ll also be watching/recording Supergirl, The Great Holiday Baking Show, Jane the Virgin, Fargo, and Major Crimes.

thevoice2015smallI’m still in a little bit of shock about who made it to tonight’s finals on The Voice, because there were a lot of amazingly talented singers who went home last week. It’s no surprise that Jordan Smith made it through, because he’s charting in the top 3 on iTunes week after week – and frankly, he’s going to win it if there isn’t some huge disaster. My other two favorites, Shelby and Madi, both went home, which is ridiculous, because in my opinion, they are both more talented than the ones left.

The top four we have competing tonight are Jordan, Jeffrey, Emily Ann, and Barrett. That’s the issue right there. Emily Ann and Barrett are nowhere near as talented as Shelby or Madi, but alas, America has spoken, and Blake has a 50% chance of winning again with two artists in the finale, while Adam and Gwen each have one. Unfortunately, Pharrell is out of the race for the win, but I take comfort in knowing that he is the kind of mentor who’s going to continue to help Madi get her big break because he believes in her talent. Regardless of my choice, tonight they all battle it out to make you vote for them, so watch and vote for your favorite!

On tonight’s episode, “Final 4 Perform,” the remaining contestants take to the stage to fight for your votes.

To watch the vocal playoffs begin, tune in to NBC at 8/7c.

I’ll also be watching Supergirl, Cake Wars, Scorpion, The Expanse, NCIS: LA, Childhood’s End, and The Great Holiday Baking Show.
