If We Controlled Your Remote… 1/26/16

Have you ever been at a loss as to what to watch? Too many shows to pick from? We’re here to give you our opinions on what we feel is worth watching. Check it out and then let us know in the comments below what you’re choosing for tonight!

Kyle’s Choice

outsiderssmallTonight, WGN America kicks off its newest scripted series, Outsiders, with a commercial-free premiere. For the past 200 years, 7 generations of the Farrell family have lived in their mountaintop homestead in Appalachia, keeping themselves cut off from the rest of the world. Now a bunch of developers who own the land want to reclaim it and all of its resources, but the Farrells will fight to protect Shay Mountain and defend their way of life, at all costs. Local sheriff Wade Houghton (Thomas M. Wright, Top of the Lake), whose family has lived in the area for 5 generations, is familiar with the Farrells and is hesitant to get involved as he knows just how violent this battle will get.

Asa Farrell (Joe Anderson, The Divide) left the clan as a teenager to explore the outside world but has now returned like the prodigal son, looking to be welcomed back into the fold, but he is now quite different from the rest of his family. Asa’s cousin Big Foster (David Morse, Concussion) is next in line to be Bren’in, the Farrells’ king, and he’s anxious to take his new position. He suspects his mother, Lady Ray (Phyllis Somerville, The Big C), has delayed handing over power to him due to Asa’s return. G’Winveer (Gillian Alexy, The Americans) is a healer for the clan. She is Asa’s third cousin and former childhood sweetheart. She’s been with Big’s eldest son Lil’ Foster (Ryan Hearst, Sons of Anarchy) ever since Asa left but still holds deep feelings for her former love. The cast also includes Christina Jackson (Boardwalk Empire), who plays Sally-Ann, one of the few African-American folks in town, who falls in love with one of the Farrells.

Since Comcast only carries WGN America in SD in this area, I’m not sure I’ll be sticking with this show, but I’m curious to check out the premiere tonight. From the trailer, it looks fort of like Sons of Anarchy meets Mad Max meets Justified.

On tonight’s episode, “Farrell Wine,” a struggle for power and control set in the mysterious hills of modern-day Appalachia centers on the Farrell family, who, in the series premiere, are faced with new threats to their off-the-grid way of life in rural Kentucky.

Meet the Farrell family tonight on WGN America at 9/8c.

I’ll also be watching/recording Marvel’s Agent Carter, Hollywood Game Night, New Girl, Grandfathered, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, The Grinder, The Flash, The Expanse, Pitch Slapped, Teen Wolf, and The Shannara Chronicles.

Jenny’s Choice

brooklyn99126smallLast week’s Brooklyn Nine-Nine was so funny – as it always is! Jake came up with an idea to get Captain Holt out of his funk by having him work a cold case that he lied and said he had new intel on. It worked – Captain Holt got involved and was more like his old self – but doing so put them in contact with someone who’d contracted mumps, which meant they were both quarantined. And it was a good thing, seeing as how they had gigantic lumps on their necks not long after! Oh my word, that was funny. Jake poked his, wanting to pop it, but it hurt too bad. And Amy ¬– who’d been vaccinated – was disgusted, so Jake wrapped a scarf around himself to (sort of) hide it. Bake in the office, Charles was depressed because his dog died, and Rosa was her typical self and tried to sarcastically bully him out of the funk. In the end, she fell in love with the puppy she got to give Charles (who didn’t want it, unable to replace his humping dog that fast), and she threw a funeral for his dog, which made him feel a bit better. Terry had to fill in for Holt while he was out, and he tried to get too many things done around the precinct. When he failed, Gina helped him figure out that what he could do was be there for the squad and not just try to beat Holt at his own game.

On tonight’s episode, “The Cruise,” Jake and Amy are excited to go on their first real vacation together, but Amy’s perfectly planned cruise ship itinerary is thwarted when they discover an old adversary is on board with them. Meanwhile, Gina and Terry help Captain Holt survive a visit from his sister, Debbie (guest star Niecy Nash), and Charles and Rosa vie for the same apartment. Paul F. Tompkins & Craig Robinson also guest star.

See who Jake and Amy encounter on the cruise tonight on FOX at 9/8c.

I’ll also be watching/DVRing Hollywood Game Night, Team Ninja Warrior, Grandfathered, Chicago Med, Junk Food Flip, The Little Couple, Chicago Fire, Chopped, & The Shannara Chronicles.

Megan’s Choice

chicagomed126smallChicago Med was great last week, and I really enjoyed the look into Connor’s past as well as Nat’s delivery. Connor was desperately trying to save two immigrants who were injured while trying to enter America illegally from Mexico. Unfortunately, the brother died, but they managed to save the girl. After all of his hard work, Connor was hopeful that the girl would get to stay, but the hospital went over his head and allowed immigration to deport her, which just made Connor even more upset than he already was. His father was presenting a large donation to the hospital for a new psychiatric ward because Connor’s mother committed suicide years ago, although Connor says that she did it to escape his father instead of just because of mental illness.

Elsewhere, Nat went into early labor, and Maggie was there to help, but she needed Will to help in the process because Maggie had to get her shift covered in the ER. While Will was walking around with Nat, Nat’s mother-in-law showed up and didn’t like what she saw. Later, the busybody mother-in-law decided to tell Will that he needed to back off because Nat was still grieving and didn’t need him messing around with her head right now. Nat was upset that Will wasn’t around, but she had to focus on the delivery, which wasn’t going as planned. The baby was turned the wrong way, and the obstetrician wanted to do an emergency C-section, but Maggie told Nat she could turn the baby because she was a midwife. It worked, and the baby boy was born healthy. I’m really hoping that Nat will be able to bond with Will even after he got pushed away by her mother-in-law. I know her husband died less than a year ago, but she’s lonely and deserves to find comfort with someone.

On tonight’s episode, “Saints,” a patient’s life is in jeopardy when legal issues complicate an essential bone marrow transplant, and Sharon Goodwin must decide what course to follow. Dr. Charles comes to an unusual conclusion about a homeless man’s recent behavior. Dr. Manning’s parents visit. And Dr. Rhodes treat the victims of a hit-and-run accident.

To find out just how far Goodwin is willing to go to save a patient, tune in to NBC at 9/8c.

I’ll also be watching Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Chicago Fire, Chopped, and The Shannara Chronicles.
