Recap/Review – Crazy Ex-Girlfriend – 12/2/16

This week’s episode of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (titled: “Who Needs Josh When You Have a Girl Group?”) was about forcing relationships between lovers and friends.

Recap:

crazyexgirlfriendrecap123smallIn this week’s episode, we see a familiar face. Trent, Rebecca’s fake ex-boyfriend, has a plan to infiltrate Josh’s friend group so that he can get closer to Rebecca. And since Josh and his friends can’t get into the bar due to the extravagant cover charge, Trent decides to pay for a table (and everything else for the guys) to make a good impression. And even though Josh, White Josh, and Hector like that everything is free, they decide that Trent is too strange and leave him at the bar, alone. With a little help from a new acquaintance, Trent decides to go straight to Rebecca and profess his love for her.

A side note about Josh… He’s been on three dates with Anna and texts her constantly, much to the annoyance of his friends.

Rebecca, Valencia, and Heather have formed a girl group and show how serious they are through a Spice Girls-esque number called “Friendtopia.” And while she’s happy with the group, she feels bad that Paula is left out. At work, she talks to Darryl and Maya about this, while being oblivious to the fact that they want to be a part of the group too.

Rebecca concocts a plan to merge her friends into one big girl group. She invites Paula over, and for a short time, their relationship seems to be back on course, until the rest of the girl group shows up and they all realize they’ve been duped. It’s obvious that Paula isn’t having a good time and the other girls feel awkward with the situation. More awkwardness comes about when Karen, AKA Angelique, shows up and gives a sex-toy demonstration.

Paula gets stuck in the bathroom after the poor renovations of Rebecca and Heather’s new place traps her in there. Heather narrates the situation through a song called, “Stuck in the Bathroom.” The girls try to get her out but are unsuccessful. They call 911, and when Rebecca wants to contact Scott to inform him of the situation, she finds texts to Sunil on Paula’s phone about wanting to leave the party. Sunil arrives and makes up a poor excuse about Paula needing to leave, but Rebecca isn’t convinced. Then, Trent bursts into the place and rescues Paula while professing his love for Rebecca. Rebecca confronts Paula, and Paula tells Rebecca everything that’s been on her mind and reveals the big secret that she had an abortion. Rebecca is hurt that her friend didn’t want to talk to her about this, and Paula tells Rebecca that their relationship is one-sided. When it appears that the firemen have come to rescue Paula, Darryl and Maya enter the place and show off their new dance in the hopes of becoming part of the girl group. It’s awkward for everyone, and Valencia records the entire thing.

After all is said and done, Trent says good-bye to Rebecca. But Rebecca thinks having sex with him will cheer her up. Afterward, we realize that Trent was a virgin before that night. Rebecca seems turned off by this but gets over it very quickly.

At work, Darryl and Maya’s dance, entitled “The Maya,” has gone a little viral (almost 2000 views and counting) and perform the dance for their co-workers. Meanwhile, Rebecca and Paula aren’t speaking, and it’s obviously heartbreaking for the both of them.

Review:

Trent’s reprise of “The Sexy Getting Ready Song” was both awkward and hilarious. I loved the call-back to one of my favorite original songs from the show.

On the flipside, I was a little confused about the “Stuck in the Bathroom” song. It seemed random and at times awkward. I felt it wasn’t needed when “Friendtopia” was the star of the episode.

Well, we finally got to the confrontation I’ve been waiting for between Paula and Rebecca. I was so happy that Paula finally got to say everything she felt, even though it hurt Rebecca. I do hope that Rebecca can eventually realize the impact she had on Paula and change for the better. I love them as a duo, but I think they need to come a long way to get back to that place.
