Tonight, ABC kicks off the new reality competition series, The Toy Box, which finds aspiring toy inventors competing for a deal with Mattel to manufacture and distribute their product at Toys ”R” Us stores across the country. In the first half of each episode, toy makers meet with host Eric Stonestreet (Modern Family) and then present their prototypes to a panel of mentors. This panel includes Dylan’s Candy Bar owner Dylan Lauren, professional toy reviewer Jim Silver, and Pixar Creative Director of Consumer Products Jen Tan. If the majority of the mentors vote for the product, the inventor will then present his or her toy to the judges in the “Toy Box” – but they don’t yet know that those judges are actually a group of four 7-9 year-old kids. The judges include no-nonsense, tough Brit Sophia Grace Brownlee (The Ellen Degeneres Show), sweet 8-year-old Aalyrah Caldwell (Uncle Buck), 9-year-old constructive-criticizer Toby Grey (The Unexpected John Cena Prank), and brutally honest 7-year-old toy expert Noah Ritter (The Ellen Degeneres Show). The judges get a chance to ask the inventors some questions and play with each of the toys before they use giant Magic 8 Balls on the wall to let the inventors know which one of them will advance to the finals and be one step closer to having their product become a reality.

The series feels very similar to Shark Tank – in fact, I’m pretty sure one of tonight’s contestants actually appeared on one of the few episodes of that show that I’ve actually seen! However, the mentors aren’t the brutal ones. They leave that up to the kid judges. It is so much fun to watch these kids ask their sometimes ridiculous questions, and I love the way they hold nothing back when it comes to critiquing the toys. I find it so refreshing because, while some of what they say is awful, it feels very honest and not done out of spite. Noah is easily the star of these kids (I doubt anyone hasn’t seen at least one of his “Apparently Kid” videos on the internet). There is no telling what is going to come out of his mouth. And you can tell that Sophie Grace really enjoys playing that nasty Brit judge that every reality competition show needs to have. Eric Stonestreet is also present while the kids question the inventors and test the products, and it’s a lot of fun to see him try to rein in these kids and keep things on track. Not only are the judges entertaining, but some of the products these people have come up with are pretty cool, and it’s interesting to hear what type of work, money, and reasoning went into developing each toy. I look forward to checking out more episodes of this show.

On tonight’s premiere, “Episode 101,” inventions include a multicultural singing doll, a wacky worm, and a party cannon.

Check out the new inventions and the kid judges tonight on ABC at 8/7c.

Jenny’s Choice

Last week on Hawaii Five-0, one of Five-0’s old “friends,” PI Harry Brown, came for help when a woman he was surveilling was kidnapped right out from under his nose. The woman’s husband hired him to follow her to prove whether or not she was cheating. When the kidnappers called the husband for ransom, he didn’t pay, so the wife told them maybe he’d pay for his girlfriend and gave them her name. They kidnapped her, and now the husband was willing to pay. In the end, it turned out the kidnapper was actually the wife’s boyfriend and they set up the “kidnapping” together. Frankly, the husband and wife deserve each other! Also, Danny learned that his ex-wife, Rachel, and her current husband, Stan, are getting a divorce. Danny tried talking to Stan to see if they could work it out for the kids’ sakes, but Stan isn’t willing to. Apparently he thinks Rachel is still in love with Danny. That doesn’t surprise me, and I don’t think that’s untrue for Danny in terms of Rachel either, but I dunno… I have to wonder if getting back together would be a good thing or bad thing. Yes, they have two kids together, but they got divorced for a reason the first time. Maybe things could be different now. Maybe not. It would suck if they got back together and then broke up again. The kids (especially Charlie, who is so young and has never known his parents to be together) would be so confused.

I’m looking forward to tonight’s episode. Remember when Grover went back to Chicago to prove that his former partner, Clay, was a bad guy after he killed his wife while in Hawaii on vacation? He tore up the guy’s house, kidnapped the guy (who was still a cop there in Chicago) and his girlfriend, and then turned himself and the guy in when he found the guy’s “dirty cop” stash of money. But that the last we heard of it all… I’ve been complaining ever since. I mean, Grover should have gotten in trouble, even though he’d proved the guy was dirty. Yet, he was back to work without a word the next episode, and we’ve never seen nor heard about Clay since. Until this week. Finally!! (I think. LOL The description for the episode makes it seem like it, but the actor who played Clay isn’t listed on the guest starring list, so… I guess we’ll see!)

On tonight’s episode, “Ua malo’o ka wai (The Water is Dried Up),” McGarrett and Five-0 are captured and face certain death after tracking a dangerous nemesis to the Island of Lanai. Also, Grover takes his son to Chicago where he testifies against a dirty cop from his past.

Find out who kidnaps the team and who Grover’s testifying against tonight on CBS at 9/8c.

I’ll also be watching/DVRing First Dates, MacGyver, Rosewood, The Toy Box, & Blue Bloods.

Megan’s Choice

When MacGyver returned last week, it did so with an incredible episode that allowed us a look into Mac’s past. He headed back to M.I.T. for the funeral of his best friend from college, but in a happier twist, it turned out she had faked her own death because someone was trying to kill her. Of course the team helped solve the case, and in the end she asked Mac to come back to research at M.I.T., but he told her he was happy where he was now. I really liked the chemistry between them, and I hope we see her again soon.

On tonight’s episode, “Hole Puncher,” when the team intercepts a terror group’s message meant for Murdoc, Mac poses as the psychopath to save the intended target and find out why they want Murdoc to assassinate him.

Find out if Mac can pull this off tonight on CBS at 8/7c.

I’ll also be watching Rosewood, Blue Bloods, Hawaii Five-0, and The Toy Box.
