If We Controlled Your Remote… 7/12/17

Have you ever been at a loss as to what to watch? Too many shows to pick from? We’re here to give you our opinions on what we feel is worth watching. Check it out and then let us know in the comments below what you’re choosing for tonight!

Jenny’s Choice

I’m so excited about tonight’s series premiere of Salvation on CBS. I’m a big fan of natural disaster movies, and the cast of this show combined with that type of story line makes me almost giddy with anticipation. A staggering discovery comes to light: an enormous asteroid is just six months away from colliding with Earth. Without alerting the public, MIT grad student Liam Cole (Charlie Rowe, Red Band Society) and tech billionaire Darius Tanz (Santiago Cabrera, Big Little Lies, Merlin, The Musketeers) team up to save humanity from this impending apocalypse. The government has its own approach. Grace Barrows (Jennifer Finnigan, Tyrant, Close to Home, Better with You) is both the Pentagon Press Secretary and a single mom. Deputy Secretary of Defense Harris Edwards (Ian Anthony Dale, Hawaii Five-0) has been tasked with running the DOD’s own top-secret plan to deflect the asteroid. Meanwhile, Darius recruits an aspiring sci-fi writer, Jillian (Jacqueline Byers, Ascension, Roadies), to work on a theoretical approach to saving humanity—a project that might prove to be all too real.

I love Ian Anthony Dale and Jennifer Finnigan. He was always great as Adam on Hawaii Five-0, and he’s…very good-looking. (In fact, the series as a whole has some very good eye candy for everyone!) And I’ve loved Finnigan since Close to Home, so…I’m super excited about it.

On tonight’s episode, “Pilot,” when MIT grad student Liam Cole discovers an asteroid is set to collide with Earth in 186 days, he joins forces with tech billionaire Darius Tanz and the U.S. government to try and stop it…and together they stumble onto the greatest conspiracy never told. Neil deGrasse Tyson guest stars as himself.

Start your 186-day journey with me tonight on CBS at 9/8c.

I’ll also be watching/DVRing MasterChef, Cutthroat Kitchen, The F Word with Gordon Ramsey, Blood Drive, Cooks vs Cons, & I’m Sorry.

Tonight, TruTV kicks off the new scripted comedy I’m Sorry, which follows the misadventures of wife/mother/comedy writer Andrea (Andrea Savage, Episodes, Veep, iZombie). While Andrea may seem confident in her job, she often lets her own neuroses get her into some pretty awkward and, for the viewer, humorous situations. By her side, trying to calm the craziness, is mild-mannered husband Mike (Tom Everett Scott, Scream: The Series, Reign, Z Nation), and young daughter Amelia (Olive Petrucci) — though she’s often the cause of some of the issues that come up. The series comes from creator/star Andrea Savage and is based on stories from her own life (which must be pretty crazy, given the premise of the first episode)! Many other talented, recognizable comedians also make appearances throughout the season.

I attended a panel for this series at this year’s ATX Television Festival, where they screened the first episode. Everyone in the theater had a great time — and not just because they gave us alcoholic drinks and popcorn. The humor and language in the series is quite adult, especially in the uncensored version we were shown. Based on the stories Andrea told at the panel, it sounds like there’s a lot more fun and craziness to come this season. I’m looking forward to checking out more of this series, and tonight I’ll get a chance, as TruTV is airing two episodes back-to-back.

On tonight’s first episode, “Pilot” Andrea discovers a titillating secret, which she can’t quite get past, about another mom at her daughter’s school, and she plays phone tag with her doctor’s office, causing everyone to wonder why the doctor is calling her on a Saturday. Then, in “Racist Daughter,” Andrea sets up a play date with the new girl in Amelia’s class and is horrified to learn that Amelia might be racist. Later, when preparing for a dinner party for Mike’s co-workers, Andrea contracts a painful medical condition.

See if this new series is for you tonight on TruTV starting at 10/9c.

I’ll also be watching/recording Big Brother, Salvation, The Carmichael Show, MasterChef, Snowfall, Blood Drive, Younger, Suits, and Kingdom.

Megan’s Choice

I have really been enjoying this season of MasterChef, especially with the addition of Aarón Sánchez as a judge. He has always been one of my favorite Food Network personalities, and I really think his cooking style has added something new to the dynamics of the show.

On tonight’s episode, “Silenced by the Lambs,” the cooks take part in a challenging skills test, during which they must prepare racks of lamb with fine artistry. Those who fail to impress the judges will face an elimination challenge that includes recreating Gordon Ramsay’s signature lamb chop dish. It is then up to the judges to decide who will leave the kitchen.

Find out who gets eliminated tonight on FOX at 8/7c.

I’ll also be watching The F Word with Gordon Ramsay and Salvation.
