timetravelingbongsmallTonight, in honor of it being 4/20, Comedy Central is kicking off the 3-night miniseries Time Traveling Bong, in which cousins Sharee and Jeff (Ilana Glazer and Paul W. Downs, Broad City) discover a time-traveling bong that sends them on an adventure of many lifetimes. Soon after the journey begins, the structural integrity of the time-travel device is compromised (aka, the bong breaks and they try to glue it back together), and now the cousins have no control over where or when they go or how to get back home. Their bizarre journey takes them through many exciting periods of history, such as the Salem witch trials of the 1600s, the segregated South of the 1960s, ancient Greece, and even a dystopian future.

The miniseries was inspired by a sketch Glazer and Downs did back in 2012. While I wasn’t a fan of Broad City, based on the trailer this looks like it could be pretty funny and entertaining. Either that or really, really horrible. Either way, I’m looking forward to checking out tonight’s premiere of this Bill & Ted-like adventure.

On tonight’s premiere, “Chapter 1: The Beginning,” two cousins discover a water pipe that allows them to travel through time after smoking pot, but when the bong is damaged they are helplessly hurtled from one epoch to another.

Take a trip…hah…tonight on Comedy Central at 10:30/9:30c.

I’ll also be watching/recording Survivor, Criminal Minds, Empire, The Americans, and The Last Panthers.

criminalmindsbb46smallI’m enjoying Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders. The cast is great and the chemistry is fun, and the cases are great. Last week, an Egyptian-American man, Malik, in Egypt was killed via chemical agent, and then they learned another Egyptian man, Jabir, had been killed as well. They learned that Malik was gay and thought that was the reason he’d been killed, but Jabir wasn’t known in the small, quiet gay community, and when they found a third victim, they knew it wasn’t a hate crime. In the end, it turned out that Jabir’s wife was the killer, targeting the men she believed responsible for her husband’s death (an incident in their past), but she killed herself before they could take her in. Thankfully, they rescued Malik’s boyfriend/significant other, who Jabir’s wife had buried alive in the hopes that he would have a slow death.

One of the things I love most about this show is seeing the different cultures and how things are so vastly different from the US – from dealing with sexuality, women, or whatever, it really brings things into perspective for me about how lucky we are to live in this country. It may not seem like it sometimes, but we are. Hopefully on tonight’s double episodes, we’ll get more proof of that, as it’s nice to be reminded of it!

On tonight’s first episode, “Whispering Death,” the IRT travels to Japan, where the team assists local law enforcement to investigate a string of homicides made to look like suicides. Also, Mae tries to encourage Clara to get out and enjoy herself. Then on the second episode, “The Lonely Heart,” the IRT heads to Paris to search for an UnSub targeting Americans who live there.

Travel the world with the International Response Team tonight on CBS starting at 9/8c.

I’ll also be watching/DVRing Heartbeat, The Goldbergs, Modern Family, Wahlburgers, black-ish, Lopez, Mystery Diners, & The Soul Man.

beyondborderssmallTonight is the series premiere of the newest Criminal Minds spinoff, Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders. This specialized International Division of the FBI is responsible for solving crimes and rescuing Americans who find themselves in danger while overseas. Heading the International Response Team is Unit Chief Jack Garrett (Gary Sinise, CSI: NY), a 20-year veteran of the Bureau. His team includes Clara Seger (Alana De La Garza, Forever, Law & Order), a smart, well-traveled, and multi-lingual cultural anthropologist; Matthew Simmons (Daniel Henney, Three Rivers), a former military hero with split-second profiling skills he honed on the battlefield; Russ “Monty” Montgomery (Tyler James Williams, Everybody Hates Chris), the unit’s compassionate, brilliant tech analyst who additionally liaises stateside with the families of those in trouble while his group is far from home; and Mae Jarvis (Annie Funke), the team’s fearless and fun medical examiner.

I’ve seen the first two episodes, and I think if you’re a fan of the original, you’ll really enjoy the spinoff. Even if you aren’t, I think you should give it a shot. The team has a lot of the same type of chemistry as the original, with a lot of fun personalities. And come on! It’s Gary Sinise! He’s great, of course, but I also REALLY loved the others. Henney’s Simmons and Funke’s Jarvis have a fun relationship, with hints of Morgan and Garcia, but not a romance, because Simmons is happily married with kids. And Monty is a great counterpart for Garcia, although not quite as eccentric. But there’s the difference of being in really cool locations overseas, and the cases are a bit different, as well.

On tonight’s episode, “The Harmful One,” Unit Chief Jack Garrett and his International Response Team (IRT) travel to Thailand when three American volunteers go missing during a trek to Bangkok. They reconnect with former colleague Clara Seger, who helps them rush to gather evidence leading to the UnSub before a storm threatens to wash it away.

Meet the new team tonight on CBS at 10/9c.

I’ll also be watching/DVRing Rosewood, The Goldbergs, Hell’s Kitchen, Modern Family, Property Brothers, Wahlburgers, black-ish, & Donnie Loves Jenny.
