If We Controlled Your Remote… 5/2/13

What a difference a week makes! We’re only two days into the May sweeps month, and my TiVo is already working overtime. There is so much on TV now as shows are ending and new shows are starting back up or returning. But fear not, because we’ve got a few suggestions to help you wade through the vast sea of new programming that’s on tonight.

zachstonesmallTonight, MTV premieres the new scripted comedy, Zach Stone is Gonna Be Famous. Recent high school graduate Zach Stone (Bo Burnham) just wants to be famous—he doesn’t know how or why he will achieve his fame, but he will do anything to achieve it. So Zach decides to do a reality show about his life as a pre-celebrity and has a camera crew follow him 24/7. Zach takes advantage of any opportunity to become famous—even if that means “headlining” at a funeral.

Zach’s dad (Thomas F. Wilson) believes in a hard day’s work and doesn’t care for his son’s get famous quick schemes. Zach’s mother (Kari Coleman) tries to be supportive of her Zach’s venture, but his younger, popular, overachiever brother Andy (Cameron Palatas) wants no part of it. Zach’s peers include oldest friend Amy (Caitlin Gerard), who keeps him grounded (as much as possible), his loyal best friend Greg (Armen Weitzman), and Christy (Shelley Hennig), the hottest, most popular girl at school, who has no idea who Zach is.

On tonight’s premiere, “Pilot,” a young man attempts to become famous by hiring a camera crew to document his life.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 2/21/13

With February sweeps going on, my TiVo has been getting so backed up—and trying to squeeze in some movies before the Oscars on Sunday isn’t helping my situation any! Tonight, there’s once again a lot of great new TV to choose from, and we’ve got some suggestions for you.

parksandrec221smallParks and Recreation has been really great this season. Last week, Leslie and Ben held a black-tie gala to raise money to build the park. However, Councilman Jamm arranged for an emergency-response drill at the same time to try to prevent Leslie from raising the $50K she needed. Meanwhile, Andy took the police-academy exam and scored 100% on the written portion but flunked the personality test. And Ron filled in for Leslie on “Pawnee Today.”

Tonight is the moment we’ve been anticipating all season—Leslie and Ben’s wedding! This is Pawnee, so I’m sure something strange will occur to make it a truly memorable event! Also, will tonight be when the city counsel finally votes yay or nay on Leslie’s park? And what craziness will my favorite trio—April, Andy, and Ron—get up to this week?

On tonight’s special double episode, “Leslie and Ben; Correspondents’ Lunch,” Leslie and Ben have two hours to complete a year-long project; at the same time, Ron’s temper gets him in trouble. Later, Leslie is at a loss for words after the speech she prepared for a special event is stolen. Meanwhile, Ben begins his new job at the Sweetums Charity Foundation; and Ann summons the courage to ask an important question.

See the hour-long episode tonight on NBC at 8:30/7:30c. Learn where to find episodes online of Parks and Recreation @ Clicker.

I’ll also be watching/recording The Big Bang Theory, Elementary, Zero Hour, Grey’s Anatomy, Community, 1600 Penn, Archer, Legit, King of the Nerds, and Suits.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 11/1/12

So, how was your Halloween? The weather here was perfect—a nice change from Sandy’s reign earlier in the week. However, I still didn’t get a lot of Trick-or-Treaters and have almost 2 pounds of candy left over! We’ve got some recommendations on what you should check out tonight while snacking away on all your fun size left-overs.

Tonight, Showtime premieres the late-night scripted mini-series, Reality Show. Mickey Wager, a reality TV producer who hasn’t had a hit show in a while, is looking for the idea that will get him back on top. He decides to secretly film an average American family, Truman Show-style, for a new reality series. However, he soon realizes that the family is too boring, so he starts to inject some artificial drama and temptations into the family’s life, with crazy results.

The series star and creator, Adam Rifkin, also created last year’s LOOK mini-series for Showtime. While I could never really get into LOOK, the idea for this new show sounds great. And based on the trailer, it looks like it’s going to be a really fun dark comedy and a great commentary on just how exploitative and fake reality TV has become.

In tonight’s episode, “The Pitch,” the perfect subjects are found, although they may be too average.

Tonight, I’ll also be watching/recording The Big Bang Theory, Elementary, The League, Sweet Genius, Childrens Hospital, and NTSF:SD:SUV::.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 9/20/12

Fall TV kicks into full gear next week, but we’ve been getting a lot of new and returning shows trickling back onto our TVs over the past couple of weeks. And tonight, we add the return of the NBC Thursday comedy lineup. This evening, I’ll be going with my dad to see a sneak preview of the new Kevin James comedy, Here Comes the Boom, but I’ll be hitting up the DVR afterwards. Read on to see what we recommend you check out tonight.

I can’t wait for the return of Parks and Recreation—it is my favorite of the Thursday comedies. At the end of last season, Leslie Knope won the City Counsel race, Ben was headed off to D.C., Ron took over the Parks and Rec department, and Andy wanted to become a cop. Tonight, we get to see where our favorite characters are at and who’s still working with whom. I hope they find a fun way to bring everyone back together and keep Leslie interacting with the rest of the gang.

In tonight’s episode, “Ms. Knope Goes to Washington,” Leslie and Andy are in Washington, D.C., visiting Ben and April at their new jobs. Back in Pawnee, Ron hosts a barbecue for the entire Parks and Recreation staff. Senators John McCain (R-Ariz.), Olympia Snowe (R-Maine), and Barbara Boxer (D-Cal.) guest star.

See what the characters are up to tonight on NBC at 9:31/8:31c. Learn where to find episodes online of Parks and Recreation @ Clicker.

Tonight, I’ll also be watching/recording SNL Weekend Update Thursday, Up All Night, The Office, The X Factor, Glee, Wilfred, Awkward., Awkward. Aftershow. You’re Welcome., Childrens Hospital, and NTSF:SD:SUV::.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 5/10/12

Everything must come to an end, and it’s incredibly hard to imaginie that it’s season finale time. New fall shows were just sprouting up and old favorites were coming back with a vengance. Show renewals will soon be announced, if they haven’t been already, and we’ll soon learn the fate of the 2011-2012 season. While you have the chance to enjoy old and new favorites, make sure you tune in to tonight’s bountiful lineup of season finales. Savor the memories you’ve shared with your favorite TV show characters this season and bid them a fond farewell. Whether you see them next year or not, remember, it was fun while it lasted!

Last week on Community, the study group paid tribute to their fallen Greendale student, Star-Burns, also known as Alex, who died in a car explosion. Britta tried to use her non existent psychology skills from taking one Greendale course to counsel her fellow students. Meanwhile, Chang used the moment to seize more control over campus security, and things got wildly out of hand. A riot ensued, and the study group all ended up expelled from Greendale.

Tonight, on “Curriculum Unavailable,” when Abed becomes convinced that Deal Pelton is an imposter, he’s required to see a therapist (guest star John Hodgman).

Switch on NBC at 8/7c for the quirkiness of Community! Learn where to find episodes online of Community @ Clicker.

Tonight, I am also watching 30 Rock, The Office, Awake, and Kathy!
