If We Controlled Your Remote… 5/9/13

There’s so much great TV on right now that it’s tough to keep up. For every show that ends its season, there seems to be another new or returning show ready to take its place. For example, tonight is the season finale of Two and a Half Men and Glee, but also the season premieres of Wipeout and Small Town Security. I highly recommend checking out tonight’s hilarious episode of The Graham Norton Show with guests Chris Pine, Benedict Cumberbatch, Kim Cattral, and Bonnie Tyler, but here are some additional things we suggest you tune in to this evening…

community59smallThis Dan Harmon-less season of Community hasn’t felt all that different to me. It’s had its ups and downs, just like the three prior seasons. Last week, we got the origin stories of the Greendale study-group members—including the genesis of Magnitude’s “Pop Pop” catchphrase—and learned that their lives have crossed paths before. It seems that their fates were destined to come together. Meanwhile, Chang was plotting to destroy Greendale, but had a “chang” of heart once he was welcomed into the study group. We discovered that Chang had been working with the head of City College.

Tonight’s episode could very well be the series finale, as NBC has made no announcement yet as to the show’s fate. I’m a little concerned if they are revisiting the darkest timeline—they may be trying to squeeze too much into a series finale. Will everything be wrapped up in case tonight is the final episode? Is the plot with City College over, or has it already been set in motion? Will Jeff graduate, and if so, what happens if the show continues for another season? I’m interested to see where they leave things tonight with the fate of the series unknown.

On tonight’s episode, “Advanced Introduction to Finality,” Jeff ponders the future after he receives enough credits to graduate. Elsewhere, the group revisit the darkest timeline.

See the season (or series?) finale tonight on NBC at 8/7c.

I’ll also be watching/recording The Big Bang Theory, Elementary, Grey’s Anatomy, Community, The Office, Hannibal, Glee, Giving You the Business, Men at Work, The Graham Norton Show, and Zach Stone is Gonna Be Famous.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 4/18/13

Is it the weekend yet?! It may be school vacation week here in Massachusetts, but that means nothing for me. I’m ready for this week to be over—with work and that horrible Boston Marathon disaster (fortunately, I was not personally impacted). To help you relax and start thinking about the weekend, we’ve got some suggestions on what to check out on TV tonight.

yourprettyfaceisgoingtohellsmallTonight at midnight, Adult Swim kicks off a new quarter-hour live-action series Your Pretty Face is Going to Hell. It is a workplace comedy set in Hell. Gary, an associate demon, wants to climb the underworld corporate ladder. However, he may just not be cut out for the job of capturing souls on Earth. On the other hand, his intern Claude will do whatever it takes to impress Satan. The series stars Matt Servitto (Banshee), Henry Zebrowski (Wolf of Wall Street), and Craig Rowin (Night of Too Many Stars).

If there’s something you can always count on from Adult Swim, it’s bizarre, humorous shows. I always find it amazing how much they manage to pack into each episode in only half the amount of time as a normal sitcom. I’m looking forward to checking out tonight’s premiere to see if this is a show I want to spend eternity with.

On tonight’s episode, “Welcome to Hell,” demon Gary and his intern, Claude, meet with a pro baseball player to convince him to thank the devil for his success on the field.

See how this hellish comedy begins tonight on Adult Swim (Comedy Central) at 11:59/10:59c. Learn where to find episodes online of Your Pretty Face is Going to Hell @ TV.com.

I’ll also be watching/recording Community, Parks and Recreation, Hannibal, Glee, Men at Work, The Graham Norton Show, and Nathan for You.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 3/21/13

Tonight kicks off my weekend of video game-related activities. Taking over Boston this weekend is the Penny Arcade Expo (PAX East) Gaming convention, and tonight is Microsoft’s pre-con kick-off party. While I won’t be watching much TV for the next few days, I’ll be recording a bunch of stuff to catch up on on Sunday. So we’ve got some suggestions on what you should set your DVRs to record tonight.

nathanforyousmallA couple weeks ago, Comedy Central introduced a new faux-documentary comedy called Nathan for You. In the opening credits for the series, Nathan proudly announces that he has a degree from one of Canada’s top business schools, and he wants to put that knowledge to work for you. Each week, Nathan gives marketing advice to small business owners to help them turn their business around, and we see these schemes put it into practice.

The catch is that his marketing campaigns are some of the most unusual (and horrible) advice you could imagine. For example, last week, Nathan saw that all of the restaurants in the area only allowed customers to use their restrooms. So he had one diner advertise themselves as “Your Local Toilet,” allowing everyone to use their bathrooms. His marketing campaign also included video screens in the bathroom stalls that asked “Can you smell that delicious food?” and showed footage of chili being slowly dropped into bowls. Comedian Nathan Fielder is hilarious in his dead-pan delivery of these terrible marketing schemes.

On tonight’s episode, “Gas Station/Caricature Artist,” Nathan Fielder puts his degree in business and life experiences to use to help small businesses, devising the world’s greatest rebate program to help an independent gas station and trying to bring fame and fortune to a fledgling caricature artist.

See the outrageous funny tonight on Comedy Central at 10:30/9:30c. Learn where to find episodes online of Nathan for You @ TV.com.

I’ll also be recording Grey’s Anatomy, Community, 1600 Penn, Glee, Archer, and Legit.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 2/28/13

Earlier this week was the San Diego Comic-Con hotel lottery—the mad dash to submit your hotel picks as fast as humanly possible, followed by a week of stress while you wait to find out if you were lucky enough to get assigned a close hotel (or ANY hotel, for that matter). Fortunately, I’ve been able to keep my mind off that as all of the great new TV this week has been keeping me busy. While it’s a somewhat light-night of TV tonight now that February sweeps is pretty much done, there’s still quite a few shows to choose from.

archer228smallArcher has been really great this season, so I was thrilled to see yesterday’s news that the series has been picked up for a fifth season! Last week, Ray, Cyril, and Archer’s Jeep got stuck in the Turkmenistan desert. Having forgotten to pack toilet paper, Archer, of course, decided to use their only map. While he was doing his deed, Sterling was bitten in the groin by a rattlesnake. The venom caused Archer to have a series of hallucinations in which English actor James Mason showed him “The Real Archer.” We got glimpses into Archer’s younger days—such as how his collegiate and professional lacrosse dreams were crushed when an older woman seduced and shot him. And during another one of his fever dreams, Sterling was just about to discover who his real father was when he was jerked back into reality by the anti-venom.

While last week was a fun (and bizarre) Archer origin story, it also brought back the series-long mystery of the identity of Archer’s father. I suspect this is a question that won’t be answered until the series finale (if at all). It was great last week to see Cheryl calling Lana out for that fact she has only been staying with ISIS because she wants to take over when Mallory dies. This show is so much fun, and it always shocks me what they are able to get away with. I can’t wait to see what the ISIS gang gets up to tonight!

On tonight’s episode, “Live and Let Dine,” Anthony Bourdain guest stars when Archer, Lana, and Cyril go on an undercover mission in a celebrity chef’s kitchen.

To see all the fun, tune in to FX at 10/9c. Learn where to find episodes online of Archer @ Clicker.

I’ll also be watching/recording Zero Hour, Community, 1600 Penn, Legit, and King of the Nerds.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 2/7/13

I couldn’t believe that my pick for last Thursday achieved record-setting ratings for the lowest in-season premiere on the major four networks ever in the history of ratings! (Have I mentioned how much I hate the Neilsen ratings?!) That said, I still stand by it—I really enjoyed the series and hope that the Nielsen families find it tonight because I want to see more. Speaking of seeing more, Thursdays are once again a packed night for new TV, and we’ve got some suggestions for what you should check out.

kingofthenerds27smallI’ve been enjoying TBS’s new reality competition series, King of the Nerds. In last week’s Nerd War, the teams had to fly tablet-controlled quadcopters through an obstacle course. It looked like the Orange team had it in the bag, but Virgil made a miraculous recovery for his team, giving them their first win. Despite Joshua’s promises not to vote for her, the Orange team put up Danielle, and the Blue team voted to put up Brandon. Seeing the intra-team strife it would cause if Danielle stayed, the blue team was hoping that Brandon would go home. They got their wish when Brandon failed at the Nerd-Off—he had a lot of trouble maneuvering his radio-controlled golf cart to push a ball into a goal.

Devastation is too weak of a word to describe my feelings when the Blue team won. I cannot stand Alana—I find her constant complaining and her low-energy excitement move so annoying. I really hope that Danielle won’t let Joshua’s “backstabbing” get her distracted—the Orange team needs to win this week and put Alana up for elimination!

On tonight’s episode, “Supernerds,” superhero trivia tests the nerds, with special guests Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes.

Don’t miss the nerdy fun tonight on TBS at 10/9c. Learn where to find episodes online of King of the Nerds @ Clicker.

I’ll also be watching/recording Do No Harm, The Big Bang Theory, Elementary, Grey’s Anatomy, Community, Parks and Recreation, The Office, 1600 Penn, Glee, Archer, Legit, and Suits.
