I have been really enjoying this light week of TV—I wish we could have this all summer, but in two weeks, the madness begins again! I’m really looking forward to the upcoming long weekend—sorry, Canada, but you just got one. We won’t be doing a column tomorrow, but if you’re looking for something to watch, I suggest checking out the Brain Games: Blow Your Mind special on FOX, as I’ve been really enjoying the series on NatGeo. But enough about tomorrow. Here’s what we suggest you check out tonight…
Tonight, Fox kicks off a new reality series called Does Someone Have to Go?. The series is like The Office meets Kitchen Nightmares, Hotel Hell, or Tabatha Takes Over, but instead of some external person coming in and overhauling the business, it leaves that task up to the employees. Each week, a business owner will put the power into the hands of his or her employees. Employees are told the salaries of their coworkers and get to hear frank thoughts about one another that were thought to be said in private. Then they must decided who to put up for possible termination.
I was both appalled and captivated by this show—this isn’t a joke, like Donald Trump saying “You’re Fired”—you are dealing with people’s livelihoods here! I’m not sure how any business’s morale could survive a process like this or why any business owner would want to do this to his or her employees. I guess they are going for the “you must tear it down to make it stronger” approach. Tonight is only part one of the premiere, so we don’t get to see the ultimate fallout from this process, just things getting stirred up.
On tonight’s episode, “VMS, Part 1,” the owner of a credit card-processing company in Illinois called Velocity Merchant Services turns her businesses over to her employees, who are given the power to make changes in the workplace—and even decide the fate of their colleagues.
See the premiere tonight on FOX at 9/8c.
I’ll also be watching/recording Rookie Blue, Save Me, Hannibal, Hell’s Kitchen, Giving You the Business, Men at Work, The Graham Norton Show, and Zach Stone is Gonna Be Famous.
