“Here’s a story…of a lovely lady…” Anyone who grew up in the early 70s probably watched (or at least knew about) The Brady Bunch, and for those of us born in the mid to late 70s, we got to watch the reruns, which were still airing all the time. I lived out in the country and didn’t have cable, but I got to watch it. I can still sing the theme song with all the right lyrics. So when I saw that HGTV was coming out with A Very Brady Renovation, featuring all six of the Brady “kids” along with a slew of HGTV renovation stars (like twins Drew & Jonathan from Property Brothers), I couldn’t wait. And it’s finally here. In addition to the Scott brothers, Barry Williams (Greg), Maureen McCormick (Marcia), Christopher Knight (Peter), Eve Plumb (Jan), Mike Lookinland (Bobby), and Susan Olsen (Cindy) are joined by Mina Starsiak Hawk and Karen E Laine from Good Bones, siblings Leanne and Steve Ford from Restored by the Fords, Jasmine Roth from Hidden Potential, and Lara Spencer from Flea Market Flip to demo, reno, and replicate the Brady Bunch house!

There were over 9,000 hours of work filmed, all of which has been edited and condensed down to a single short season, starting with tonight’s 90-minute extended premiere. One cool thing is we’ll see/meet Florence Henderson’s (mom Carol, who passed away in 2016) son and daughter, as well as the children of the show’s creator and the granddaughter of the actual owner of the house itself, all of whom will show up for the reveal.

On tonight’s 90-minute premiere, “Honey, We’re Home!” the Brady Bunch kids have an emotional reunion at the famous Studio City, CA, home before beginning demolition.

Don’t miss it tonight on HGTV at 9/8c.

I’ll also be watching So You Think You Can Dance, Kids Baking Championship, & Whose Line Is It Anyway.

ellensdesignchallengesmallIt’s no surprise that I love design shows. I also love Ellen DeGeneres. So what happens when you combine those two things? Ellen’s Design Challenge, that’s what. In a six-episode series, six competitors will tackle challenges to sketch, design, and build interesting, fun, and functional furniture. A contest will go home each week, until the last competitor standing receives $100,000 and their work is featured in HGTV Magazine.

Ellen is really, really funny, so I hope she brings her sense of humor and fun to the show. I can’t wait to see the designs the contestants come up with.

On tonight’s episode, “Episode 1,” six furniture builders garnered from all over the U.S. gather at a workshop and meet their carpenters for the first time, along with a mystery gift that they must transform into a piece of furniture, and it does not take long for temperatures to rise.

See what the mystery gift is tonight on HGTV at 9/8c.

I’ll also be watching/DVRing Tiny House Nation, Best. Ever., & Eye Candy.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 8/31/14

It’s still germ central around my house. I feel awful. Hubs feels better for the most part, but kid still has a lingering cough. Fun stuff. Thank goodness for new TV. But be sure to keep up, because soon, there’s going to be so much new TV that we’ll be drowning in it. 😉 But for now, check out our recommendations.

flippingtheblocksmallI am truly loving HGTV’s Flipping the Block. Unlike the similar show on FYI, I don’t dislike any of the teams on this one—there are a couple I like more than the others, but still, I don’t dislike any of them. The teams are coming down to the wire now. Last week, they finished the indoor part of the renovation on their condos. The living rooms all turned out pretty darn great, but I gotta say, while I liked John & Whitney’s a lot (they’re my favorites—they’re too adorable!) and it was probably my favorite, there were aspects of the others that I loved as well. I was VERY impressed with Curtis & Amanda and their renovation on $80. They may have gotten the idea for the ceiling from another team, but their room turned out pretty damn good and the ceiling was beautiful. Shauna & Anicka had a LOT of orange in their room, but I loved the original artwork they included, and Craig & Brian’s blue was nice, but I especially loved the storage and mirror in their dining area.

On tonight’s episode, “It Takes a Block,” the teams begin work on their final renovation, which involves the common spaces and curb appeal, and they’re surprised when Josh and David join them to help transform the outside area into the most attractive on the block.

See how the teams all work together tonight on HGTV at 9/8c.

I’ll also be watching/DVRing Underground BBQ Challenge, Rachael vs. Guy: Kids Cook-Off, The Great Food Truck Race, Unforgettable, Cutthroat Kitchen, & Reckless.

Megan’s birthday was yesterday (Happy birthday, Megan!), so she had a party last night with her family & friends…ergo she wasn’t awake enough to participate in today’s Remote. But Kyle & I are here to entertain you, so check out what we’re recommending. *grin*

flippingtheblocksmallA few years ago, I had a friend who lived in Australia and was able to get me episodes of a show that aired there, called The Block. Teams of two had to renovate apartments in a single building (and later on, separate houses, rather than apartments in the same building), living in the space as they renovated. It was a great show, and my husband & I loved it. FYI just started a series a few weeks ago called Rowhouse Showdown, with a similar concept, except they aren’t living in the houses they’re renovating, which is honestly one of the best parts of the Australian series.

So when HGTV started advertising their latest series, Flipping the Block, I was really excited, especially when I learned it’s the same format as the Australian series. Four teams move into identical living spaces, where they will demo the place and make over the entire home before it goes on the auction block. The winning duo keeps the return on investment, along with a $50,000 cash prize. They’ll be mentored by David Bromstad (first winner of Design Star), Nicole Curtis (Rehab Addict), & Scott McGillivray (Income Property). It should be a lot of fun seeing the pain the teams will have to go through as they live in the messes they’re renovating!

On tonight’s episode, “Welcome to the Block,” four teams are tasked with the job of renovating a dilapidated condo complex for resale in only eight weeks. Their first challenge is to redesign a master bedroom from the floor to the ceiling, and the winner receives $5,000.

See the spaces the teams have to move into and find out who wins the first prize money tonight on HGTV at 9/8c.

I’ll also be watching/DVRing Guy’s Grocery Games, Food Network Star, The Last Ship, The Musketeers, Unforgettable, Cutthroat Kitchen, Frankenfood, & Reckless.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 6/8/14

Ahh, Sunday. Friend or foe, your choice. For me, it’s both a blessing and a curse, especially this week. My husband had last week off for vacation, so he goes back to work today (boo!), but there’s a lot of great TV on this week, starting tonight (yay!), so… What about you? For now, check out what we’re recommending you watch tonight!

thebigtipsmallMy first pick tonight is a Food Network special, called The Big Tip with Rachael Ray. Tonight is a sneak preview of a new show hosted by Rachael, which will air this coming fall. In this brand-new series, Rachael will travel to one town each episode and meet three incredibly hardworking people who have been serving as waiters and waitresses for years. Each of these deserving individuals will receive a life-changing tip — but only one of them will receive the big tip.

I love the idea of this show because too often, servers — even hardworking ones — go unnoticed and under-appreciated. Years ago, when my family and I lived in the small town of Garden City in the southwest corner of Kansas, there was a cheap, family-style restaurant (think a step down from Applebee’s or Chili’s, but a sit-down place, not fast food) that I loved to go to. The food was good, not great, and the prices were cheap, but not quite McDonald’s. But there was one waitress there who was always friendly, always had a smile on her face, was always efficient, and always got my order right (and if you knew me, you would know I tend to place the most complicated orders in the history of dining out: no sauce, light sauce, extra sauce, sauce on the side, no lettuce, etc etc. LOL). I’d love to imagine others like her who get noticed by Rachael’s show and rewarded for the extra effort they put into their jobs.

On tonight’s episode, “Serving Up Big Tips,” Rachael Ray and Rossi Morreale travel throughout America on a mission to give life-changing tips to deserving waiters and waitresses, meeting a foster mother studying for the ministry, a woman who volunteers, and a waitress who has a dog rescue.

Catch the show tonight on Food Network at 10/9c.
