What would happen if you took Dexter and added elements of a dark rom-com? You’d get Lifetime’s new series YOU. Joe (Penn Badgley, Gossip Girl) is the manager at a small local bookstore and on the surface seems like your average nice guy next door. His neighbors in the apartment across the hall are always going at it, so Joe keeps young Paco (Luca Padovan, Super Wings!) company when he is alone and scared in the hallway. However, there is a darker side to Joe. When he crosses paths with aspiring writer Beck (Elizabeth Lail, Dead of Summer, Once Upon a Time), he quickly becomes infatuated with her. He utilizes the internet, social media, and good old-fashioned peeping Tom techniques to stalk her, learning every intimate detail of her life. His goal is to get her to fall in love with him, and so he arranges for serendipitous meet-cutes and manages to ease his way into her life. However, there are still some obstacles in their relationship, and he plans to remove them no matter what it takes. The series is based on the based on the novel of the same name by Caroline Kepnes and is produced by Greg Berlanti (responsible for the majority of The CW’s lineup) and Sera Gamble (The Magicians) and also features Zach Cherry (Crashing, Search Party), Shay Mitchell (Pretty Little Liars), and a special guest appearance by John Stamos.

I got to see tonight’s premiere back in June at the ATX Television Festival and have been anxiously waiting for the series to air – it was probably my favorite of the new shows I saw at the festival. It is disturbing, very dark, and sometimes a bit funny and romantic. I had oddly conflicting feelings while watching. Joe can be incredibly charming, and you kind of root for him to succeed as he and Beck would make a fun couple. However, at the same time, he’s a complete psychopath, so you don’t really want him in Beck’s life. In the pilot we just scratch the surface of the dastardly things he’s capable, and I can’t wait to see how this thrilling story plays out.

On tonight’s premiere, “Pilot,” Joe meets Beck, falls in love, and goes down a social media rabbit hole to learn everything about her. He becomes so obsessed that he tracks her IRL (and they meet again). This might be a real shot at real love. But there are some things standing in the way…like her ex, Benji.

Meet Joe and Beck tonight on Lifetime at 10/9c.

Last week, the third season of UnREAL premiered on Lifetime. As the season opened, Rachel had just finished her six-month self-imposed exile following the deadly events of the previous season. She reluctantly agreed to return to “Everlasting,” but she warned Quinn that she had made a vow to no longer lie. Just as she arrived on set, Rachel was ready to bolt again when she saw that ex Jeremy — who committed double murder for the show last season — had also returned, but Quinn and Chet told her they needed to keep him close so that they could be sure he wasn’t going to talk to the police. For its new season, Everlasting has its first ever female suitress, Silicon Valley mogul Serena, and it looked like she wasn’t going to be as easy to control as past suitors. However, it wasn’t long before the producers were off to their usual despicable, manipulative activities, which were jaw-dropping for the show’s new on-set psychiatrist, who couldn’t believe what he was witnessing.

I had forgotten how much I missed this show until I watched the season premiere. I found myself instantly sucked back into this crazy world with these insane, manipulative people. I can’t wait to see how the rest of the season plays out!

On tonight’s episode, “Shield,” after a poker game with the contestants that leaves Serena the sore winner, Chet teaches her how to be the woman that all men want to marry. Quinn makes a connection with one of the contestants after meeting Chet’s new swimsuit model girlfriend.

Find out what Chet teaches Serena tonight on Lifetime at 10:02/9:02c.

I’ll also be watching/recording Good Girls, The Resident, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, iZombie, Final Space, and The Alienist.

Wisdom of the Crowd has really grown on me, and it has a lot to do with the writing. Last week the FBI came to investigate Sophe, and they said it was due to the virus that shut down the site, but it turned out the virus was sent by the NSA. The FBI was actually working with the NSA, and they were there to find out who the leak was that helped Tanner on the case a couple weeks ago concerning the online game that encouraged kids to kill themselves. Tanner figured out what was going on and they backed off, but I’m sure this won’t be the end of them trying to get to Sophe.

On tonight’s episode, “Proof of Concept,” Tanner is offered new evidence in Mia’s case if Sophe can prove someone is innocent of murder. Also, Tanner and Sara begin depositions with AllSourcer for the rights to Sara’s work and Sophe’s code.

To find out if they can get the evidence about Mia, tune in to CBS at 8:30/7:30c.

I’ll also be watching NCIS: LA, Guy’s Grocery Games, and Guy’s Big Project.

murderinthefirst615smallI have to admit that I didn’t watch any of the first season of Murder in the First, even though I love Taye Diggs. I’m not a huge fan of the concept of a single case lasting all season. But when I read the description of this season’s case, I thought I might give it a shot, so I watched last week’s premiere, and I have to say…I loved it. I love the cast – Taye Diggs, Kathleen Robertson, and Ian Anthony Dale, especially. And the case… Heart-stoppingly frightening. Two high school boys shooting up a bus full of students and anyone who got in their way? Scary as hell for a mom of a 17-year-old. 🙁 One of the boys was shot but he’s now under guard in the hospital, and police all over the city are now searching like crazy for the other, who is bat-shit crazy.

On tonight’s episode, “Schizofrenzy,” tensions mount as the manhunt for the missing shooter proves to be more difficult than expected. Terry is promoted to acting Lieutenant, which he soon discovers comes with responsibilities more taxing than he anticipated.

To see what responsibilities Terry faces and how the manhunt goes, tune in to TNT at 10/9c.

I’ll also be watching/DVRing So You Think You Can Dance, Major Crimes, Guilty Pleasures, & Top 5 Restaurants.

unreal61smallTonight, Lifetime premieres its new scripted series UnREAL, which follows the behind-the-scenes drama of a fictitious Bachelor-like reality show called Everlasting, where a group of woman compete to win the heart of handsome, rich Brit Adam Cromwell (Freddie Stroma, Pitch Perfect). The series stars Shiri Appleby (Roswell, Life Unexpected) as Rachel Goldberg, a young producer who had a meltdown the prior season, but her amazing ability to manipulate the contestants has series creator Chet (Craig Bierko, Cinderella Man) welcoming her back. And to make things more awkward for her, Rachel’s ex, Jeremy (Josh Kelly, One Life to Live), is a cameraman for the show, and his new fiancée is on-set makeup artist Lizzie (Siobhan Williams, Black Box). The executive producer of Everlasting, Quinn King (Constance Zimmer, Entourage), is ruthless and demands that her staff does anything and everything to create drama, make the contestants fill their assigned character roles and build the show’s narrative.

I’ve seen the first three episodes, and I would have watched more had they been available — I was instantly fascinated, entertained, and completely sucked in. I have never seen an episode of The Bachelor or The Bachelorette, but I’ve seen enough reality TV to be able to really relate to what’s going on. UnREAL is a very dark, shocking series — it is absolutely despicable some of the things these producers do to manipulate the contestants and build the desired narrative! The show will have you questioning just how real the drama is on your favorite “reality” shows and wondering what is really going on just outside of the camera’s view. I highly recommend checking this show out tonight.

On tonight’s premiere, “Return,” a producer, Rachel Goldberg, works to manipulate relationships on a dating show in order to film outrageous footage as the series begins.

Don’t miss the fun premiere tonight on Lifetime at 10/9c.

I’ll also be watching/recording The Whispers, The Island, Turn, and Devious Maids.
