I can’t believe Christmas is just 3 weeks away! It seems to be coming so fast this year. While I did some shopping on Black Friday and Cyber Monday, as usual, I ended up buying way more for myself than for the people on my shopping list—so I am only done with about a third of my holiday shopping. So while you make your wish lists and shopping lists, we’re here to help you make your “what to watch on TV tonight” list…
Last year, NBC took on the epic task of airing a live production of The Sound of Music, and this year they are at it again with Peter Pan Live! Everyone is familiar with this story of the boy who refuses to grow up, and this isn’t the first time NBC has telecast a live production of the popular Broadway play. They took on the monumental task of airing a live production of the musical starring Mary Martin in 1955. Then in 1956 and again in 1960, they aired additional adaptations, also starting Martin. On Broadway, the role of Peter has traditionally been played by a woman (Martin, Sandy Duncan, Cathy Rigby), so it’s no surprise that NBC has also gone this route for tonight’s production. Allison Williams (Girls, The Mindy Project) will take on the titular role, while her nemesis, the evil Captain Hook, will be played by Christopher Walken! Also part of the company for tonight’s production are Christian Borle (Smash, Sound of Music Live! ) and Minnie Driver.
I’m really looking forward to tonight’s presentation, as this is a play I’m much more familiar with than last year’s The Sound of Music. I have seen some of the previous NBC musical presentations, and I can recite most of the play and songs by heart ever since working the spotlights when my middle school put on a presentation of the play. I’m interested to see how NBC has modified some of the music for tonight’s presentation—some of the original songs may have been okay in the 50s and 60s but wouldn’t be considered very PC these days. But what I’m probably most looking forward to is seeing Christopher Walken own the stage. He is always so hilarious on Saturday Night Live, and I think he will bring a really fun take on the role of Hook.
Check out the fun tonight on NBC at 8/7c.
I’ll also be recording The McCarthys, Elementary, Bones, Gracepoint, White Collar, Covert Affairs, and Newsreaders.
