If We Controlled Your Remote… 9/5/13

Every week that we get closer to the end of September, I realize just how unprepared I am for the oncoming new fall TV onsalught! Even though I’ve got my trusty TiVo to help me record everything, how am I going to find the time to watch it all?! If anyone knows how to pause or create time, please let me know! Fortunately, the summer TV schedule has been far more manageable—several nights, I’ve found myself anxiously awaiting the 10 o’clock hour just for something new to watch! So we’ve got some suggestions to help you find something new to watch tonight.

wilfred95smallTonight, another season of Wilfred comes to a close. Last week, Ryan saved Wilfred from Jenna’s burning house. Wilfred then set out to become a hero dog, trying to prove his bravery in many different ways—all of which just ended up showcasing how wimpy he was. Watching all of these antics, Ryan realized that he wasn’t protecting Jenna by staying away and started letting his guard down. Soon, Jenna started seeing the real Ryan, and by the end of the episode, she kissed him, and Ryan kissed her back.

Was this just a one-time kiss, or is Jenna really in love with Ryan? And what about Drew—what will he do if/when he finds out?! This kiss has been three seasons in the making, although most of the time, it seemed like a one-sided infatuation. I’m interested to see where the show goes from here.

On tonight’s episode, “Regrets,” Jenna forbids Ryan from seeing Wilfred when he needs him most.

Find out why Wilfred needs him and whether or not Ryan will go against Jenna’s wishes tonight on FX at 10/9c.

I’ll also be watching/recording Big Brother, Rookie Blue, Burn Notice, Graceland, Supermarket Superstar, Childrens Hospital, and NTSF:SD:SUV::.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 8/29/13

I’m excited because we just got a “Save the Date” for this year’s Syfy Digital Press Tour event in October. Last year was the first time I was invited, and I had a great time. This year, we’ll be headed to Montreal to see the sets of Being Human and the new series Helix. It looks like I’ll be making the road trip along with two other bloggers, so it should be a fun time, with lots of great info to report back. But let’s get to the reason you read this column—our suggestions on what you should check out on TV tonight.

supermarketsuperstarsmallOne new series I’ve really been enjoying is Supermarket Superstar. Each week, three contestants try to get their food product onto supermarket shelves. In the first round, a panel of judges (including Debbi—aka Mrs.—Fields and Chef Michael Chiarello) tastes the contestants’ products and provide some feedback. The contestants then refine their recipes in high-tech test kitchens, while taking into account cost and nutrition. The new products are then given to a focus group, and based on their feedback, the judges eliminate one of the products. Finally, the remaining two contestants work with a marketing expert to design the packaging and branding for their product. They present these to a supermarket buyer, who decides which of the products will move forward to the later rounds of the competition.

I find it fascinating to see how the contestants go about altering their recipes to lower the cost, and then how they go about fixing their branding in order to appeal to more customers. However, the one thing that always bugs me is that there is always some stubborn contestant who refuses to take the advice of the experts, and sure enough, they are usually the one to go home. The exception was last week, where a younger contestant who was too eager to please the judges was eliminated early, while the most stubborn contestant yet managed to win!

On tonight’s episode, “Sauces,” sauces are prepared by a small business owner, a single mom, and a vegan pin-up model.

Find out which home cook goes forward tonight on Lifetime at 10:30/9:30c.

I’ll also be watching/recording Big Brother, Rookie Blue, Hollywood Game Night, Wilfred, Childrens Hospital, and NTSF:SD:SUV::.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 8/15/13

It seems like these summer weeks have been flying by. While it’s been nice having a little less TV on during the summer, why can’t these networks schedule anything I want to watch at 8pm?! The 9 and 10pm time slots are so overloaded that I often find myself still trying to catch up on the previous night’s programs during primetime the following night! I’m jealous of those Central time zone folks who get that extra hour after primetime! But enough of my griping. Here’s what we recommend you check out tonight—note that none of them are earlier than 9pm!

rookieblue815smallLast week on Rookie Blue, it was Frank and Noelle’s wedding day, and everyone at the precinct was preparing to head to the ceremony, when a bus full of senior citizens was robbed at gunpoint. But that wasn’t the only issue—Noelle had pulled a runaway bride after finding a lump. So while Traci and Steve looked for Noelle, the others interviewed the seniors. Meanwhile, Oliver asked Celery to be his last-minute date for the wedding, where they ran into his ex; Holly kissed Gail, who didn’t know how to react; and once again, Sam stared longingly at Andy and Nick being a couple.

This season of Rookie Blue has been really good—and I think that’s primarily due to the introduction of Chloe and the dissolution of Sam/Andy! I wish Sam would just move on and leave Andy alone and get on with his life. I really like Andy and Nick together and don’t want to see him mess up another relationship of hers—yes, I’m still bitter about Luke! 🙂 This thing with Gail all of a sudden, possibly being a lesbian seems to have come out of nowhere, but it will be interesting to see where it goes. And I’m also interested to see how the relationship between Oliver and Celery develops.

On tonight’s episode, “What I Lost,” Chris’s son is kidnapped while in Andy and Nick’s care.

To see how Andy and Nick manage to get Chris’s son back, tune in to ABC at 10/9c.

I’ll also be watching/recording Big Brother, Rookie Blue, Hollywood Game Night, Wilfred, Burn Notice, Graceland, Supermarket Superstar, Childrens Hospital, and NTSF:SD:SUV::.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 7/18/13

If you are lucky enough to be at Comic-Con, say hi to Kyle! For those of us stuck at home, Megan, JJ, & I have recommendations for watch to watch tonight on TV. 😉

hollywoodgamenightsmallI really enjoyed last week’s premiere of Hollywood Game Night. Jane Lynch was great as the host, interacting well with the contestants and the celebrities. The celebrity guests were, for the most part, great. I enjoyed the jibes and rivalries. The games were fun, too, although I’d love to see something like Pictionary or charade-type games. I can’t wait to find out what games they play tonight and whether or not the contestans and celebrities are any good.

On tonight’s episode, “Don’t Kill My Buzz-er,” two contestants will lead their team of three celebrities, which include Valerie Bertinelli, Cheryl Hines, Sarah Chalke, Yvette Nicole Brown, Rob Riggle, and Matthew Morrison, in hopes of winning the $25,000 grand prize.

See what crazy antics the games bring out tonight on NBC at 10/9c.

I’ll also be watching/DVRing Summer Camp, Burn Notice, Hell’s Kitchen, Motive, Sullivan & Son, & Graceland.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 4/25/13

The weekend is almost upon us. While most of this week has been pretty light as far as new TV goes, May sweeps is almost here and things are ramping back up. Tonight, there’s loads to choose from, and to help you decide what to watch, we’ve got some suggestions.

Kyle’s Choice

givingyouthebusinesssmallTonight, Food Network is kicking off a new reality series called Giving You the Business. Each week, a CEO will pick four stand-out employees and put them to the ultimate test. While running the business, each employee will be given a series of outrageous challenges to overcome—all while the big boss watches on secretly via hidden cameras. At the end, the CEO will choose the strongest of these employees and award them the ultimate prize—the keys to their very own franchise worth up to half a million dollars!

The series kind of sounds like Undercover Boss meets Chef Wanted—I’m sure the candidates will all have some sort of emotional back-story and we’ll learn how the prize would change their lives forever. While I don’t really need yet another show added to my already-busy TV schedule, this one sounds interesting and I’m looking forward to checking it out tonight.

On tonight’s episode, “Pepperoni with a Side of Chaos,” four employees of Famous Famiglia are given a shot at running their own pizzeria franchise.

See the series premiere tonight on Food Network at 10/9c. Learn where to find episodes online of Giving You the Business @ TV.com.

I’ll also be watching/recording The Big Bang Theory, Elementary, Grey’s Anatomy, Community, The Office, Parks and Recreation, Hannibal, Glee, Tabatha Takes Over, Chef Wanted with Anne Burrell, Men at Work, The Graham Norton Show, and Your Pretty Face is Going to Hell.
