If We Controlled Your Remote… 8/14/12

It’s been a piss poor few days around my house, as none of us are feeling greatā€”my new 9th grader feeling the worst of the three of us. šŸ™ So I may not actually get stuff watched tonight, but my DVR is busy nonetheless. Check out what we think you should be watching. šŸ™‚

The last new episode of Rizzoli & Isles was kind of a heartbreaker for Jane and Frankie because one of the guys they knew growing up was killed. When they learned that his brothersā€”the other members of his ā€œboy bandā€ā€”had killed him, the heartbreak just wratcheted up a notch. I think my favorite part of the episode, though, had to be Maura listening to and watching the victim and his brothers sing and perform while she performed an autopsy on him. It was just an incredibly sad episode, and not just on the case front. Angela found out that Lydia had slept with her ex-husband (husband at the time? I don’t know..) and son both and wasn’t sure which was the father of her baby. Angela was understandably hurt, and at first, she was almost more upset at Jane and Frankie, who knew but didn’t tell her. She started to move out, but they convinced her she had nothing to be ashamed about, that it was all their father’s fault and not hers, and she stayed, gathering the two of them and Maura in a group hug that was very sweet.

Tonight is the summer finale. I don’t know when it will be back on, but I assume in January or thereabouts. I hope the mid-season ends on a good note for Frankie, who thinks he bombed his detective’s interview, and for the whole Rizzoli family, what with a possible grandbaby or half-sibling on the way.

In tonight’s episode, ā€œMelt My Heart to Stone,ā€ a statue breaks open to reveal a dead woman inside; the squad gets a new homicide detective; Dennis Rockmond returns to Boston and tries to woo Maura; Lydia goes into labor.

Don’t miss it tonight on TNT at 9/8c. Learn where to find episodes online of Rizzoli & Isles @ Clicker.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 8/7/12

Wow, what a really light night of TV tonight, especially for scripted shows! Most of the networks are either airing reruns or some sort of reality shows. But it’s just the calm before next week’s new TV storm of season and series premieres and finales. So if you’re not watching the Olympics, tonight’s a great night to work on emptying that DVR for fall! Or if you’re looking for something new to watch, here’s our suggestions.

We are down to the final 5 contestants on The Glee Project. Last week, the theme was Romanticality. (Is that even a word?!) The six contestants paired themselves into couples for the homework taskā€”Shanna and Michael, Aylin and Lily, and Blake and Ali. Guest judge Darren Criss wasn’t impressed by the girls’ full-on make-out and instead chose Blake and Ali as the top team, with Blake being the winner. This was the first time Blake had won something and the first time Shanna had received any negative feedback (which she blamed on her partner and perennial bottom three, Michael). For the video shoot, Blake chose to keep Ali as his partner, but Lily was paired with Michael, and Aylin was paired with Shanna. Shanna and Aylin hardly connected romantically and seemed to just be having fun dancing, while Blake failed to harmonize, making them the bottom three. In the end, Shanna wasn’t called back.

I think Shanna’s downfall was that she was never in the bottom three, and this was the first time she had to sing for Ryan. While she sang great, she had no connection with Ryan, whereas the others had sung for him so many times that he had more of a sense of their personalities. While it’s interesting seeing this Glee casting process, there are a couple things that bug me with the way this show is run. First, Ryan Murphy seems to be more concerned with finding a pre-packaged character than finding a talented singer/dancer/actor. This past week, I even heard the phrase “this isn’t a talent competition”ā€”that’s exactly what this is! And if they are really looking for characters, I don’t understand why the two guys are still in the competitionā€”there is nothing unique about them. Also, why does it need to be only one person who gets a part on Glee? In the first season, they gave four of the contestants roles. I would be perfectly fine seeing as many of these contestants as they want get rolesā€”I had no problems with the “cop-out” ending to the first season.

In tonight’s episode, “Actability,” acting ability is appraised in a test that includes a performance of the Pink song “Perfect.”

If We Controlled Your Remote… 6/26/12

Comic-Con is just about two weeks away, and I’m getting really excited. However, I’m also stressing out about what I’m going to be able to see! They seem to have really spread out the TV panels this year, so it’s going to be tough to do my usual pick a room and stick with it. Speaking of lots of to see, Tuesdays are one of the more packed nights of TV this summer. Read on to find out what we recommend you check out tonight.

The thing I like about The Glee Project is that it gives us a glimpse into the Glee casting processā€”as insane as it may be. This season, the show really hasn’t changed that muchā€”I think even the episode names are the same as last year. However, they seem to have really tried to get a real diverse group of contestants this time, including a girl in a wheelchair, a blind guy, and a transgender male. Last week, it was all about Vulnerability, and the contestants needed to show theirs while performing “Everybody Hurts.” As usual, this led to lots of tears among the contestants. It was Mario, Charlie, and Lily who had to do last chance performances, and once again, my lack of musical taste was confirmedā€”I thought Charlie’s rendition of “Fix You” sounded terrible (it was very different from the original), but Ryan Murphy loved it. However, in the end, no one was sent home.

In tonight’s episode, “Sexuality,” the contestants must prove their sultry worth in a lusty rendering of the songs “Moves Like Jagger” and “Milkshake.” Naya Rivera is the guest mentor.
