If We Controlled Your Remote… 8/9/10

Megan is still away in Vancouver for the Psych and Facing Kate set visits, so I’m going to do double duty and recommend two shows. They have 3 things in common: Both shows are on the same network. Both shows are female-driven cop shows. Both shows are absolutely top-notch fantastic, and if you aren’t watching them, you need to be! What am I talking about? Check it out below, then make sure you let us know what you’ll be watching tonight. If you’re a fan of these two shows, give them a shout out, okay?!

Jenny’s 1st Choice

My first recommendation tonight is TNT’s The Closer, at 9/8c. The show stars Kyra Sedgwick (wife of Kevin Bacon, woohoo) in the lead role of Brenda Leigh Johnson, Deputy Chief of the LAPD. Brenda is a top-notch investigator and interrogator who pinpoints a suspect, traps the person in a lie and draws a confession. Despite Brenda’s brilliance as an interrogator, she is hopeless at LAPD politics, and her drive to close the case often interferes with her personal life.

Brenda’s FBI Agent husband, Fritz Howard, is played by Jon Tenney. Their relationship is fantastic to watch, and his character is so loveable. The other characters are brilliant, as well. G.W. Bailey’s Lt. Provenza and Tony Denison’s Detective Flynn never fail to bring comic relief, and you can’t help but love Michael Paul Chan as Detective Mike Tao, Raymond Cruz as Detective Julio Sanchez, and Corey Reynolds as Sgt. David Gabriel.

On tonight’s episode, the squad investigates a series of murders that indicate a Mexican drug cartel may have moved into the city. Don’t miss it tonight at 9/8c on TNT.

Jenny’s 2nd Choice

Following that, at 10/9c, is Rizzoli & Isles, which is based on one of my favorite book series by Tess Gerritsen. It stars the beautiful and talented Angie Harmon as the gruff but fantastic-at-her-job Detective Jane Rizzoli. Her philosophy for success? Make every perp hunt personal. Get angry, never give up, and for God’s sake, wear flats to a scene. You’ll never catch anyone if you’re wearing high heels. Starring alongside her is the great Sasha Alexander as the fashion-conscious, brilliant Medical Examiner, Dr. Maura Isles. She wants to believe that there is a scientific explanation for everything that happens. It isn’t fate that sends a bicyclist flying over the handlebars to her death; it’s because her front tire hit a frost heave and kinetic energy took over. Fate has nothing to do with it. Death is not a mystical process; it is organic. She finds that comforting. She also knows the cops all call her “The Queen of the Dead.”

Along with those two ladies, the show stars Lorraine Bracco and Jordan Bridges as Jane’s mother and brother, Bruce McGill as her ex=partner, Vince Korsak, and Lee Thompson Young, her current partner (who throws up every time he’s around a dead body or crime scene), Barry Frost. Although he’s only been seen in one episode, so far, the sexy Billy Burke plays FBI Agent and Jane’s love interest, Gabriel Dean. I am crossing my fingers we will see more of him later this season. I know he’ll be back, but…

On tonight’s episode, the eldest brother in a Boston “Brahmin” family (direct descendents of passengers on the Mayflower) is found in the harbor dead after an apparent sailing accident. But Maura’s close connection with the family and Jane’s resentment over the wealth they display threaten to derail their investigation. Angela (Jane’s mother), meanwhile, tries her hand at selling a Polynesian health drink. Mark-Paul Gosselaar (Saved By the Bell & TNT’s upcoming Franklin & Bash) and Peter Onorati guest-star. Don’t miss it tonight at 10/9c on TNT!
