Tonight is the series premiere of Black Lightning on The CW at 9/8c. Jefferson Pierce (Cress Williams) is a man wrestling with a secret. As the father of two daughters and principal of a charter high school that also serves as a safe haven for young people in a New Orleans neighborhood overrun by gang violence, he is a hero to his community. Nine years ago, Pierce was a hero of a different sort. Gifted with the superhuman power to harness and control electricity, he used those powers to keep his hometown streets safe as the masked vigilante Black Lightning. However, after too many nights with his life on the line, and seeing the effects of the damage and loss that his alter ego was inflicting on his family, he left his Super Hero days behind and settled into being a principal and a dad. Choosing to help his city without using his superpowers, he watched his daughters Anissa (Nafessa Williams) and Jennifer (China Anne McClain) grow into strong young women, even though his marriage to their mother, Lynn (Christine Adams), suffered. Almost a decade later, Pierce’s crime-fighting days are long behind him…or so he thought. But with crime and corruption spreading like wildfire, and those he cares about in the crosshairs of the menacing local gang The One Hundred, Black Lightning returns — to save not only his family, but also the soul of his community. The show also stars Damon Gupton, Chantal Thuy, Edwina Findley, James Remar, Jill Scott, Kyanna Simone Simpson, & Marvin “Krondon” Jones III.

Tonight is also the series premiere of This Time Next Year on Lifetime at 10:02/9:02c. Just in time to make New Year’s resolutions, Lifetime debuts the new series, This Time Next Year, with Emmy nominee Cat Deeley as the host. The show follows the emotional journeys of ordinary people as they embark on extraordinary missions to change their lives, over the course of just twelve months. But what would have been one year for them, is only moments for viewers as each transformation is revealed instantaneously as participants enter one door and emerge from another, showing off a new version of themselves. From reconstructive surgeries to heartwarming reunions, infertility to weight loss, no hurdle is too big for the brave individuals who have chosen to take control of their lives. Before she sends them off on their journeys, Deeley meets each participant and they make their personal pledge for change in front of a live audience. Only after their reveal will viewers learn how, and if, they achieved their goals as the participants relive their challenges and share their successes.

The show stars series’ creators/writers/executive producers Matt Ingebretson and Jake Weisman as two Junior Executives-in-Training at Hampton DeVille, a heartless, corporate hell-hole led by tyrannical CEO Christian DeVille (Lance Reddick) and his top lieutenants, sycophants John and Kate (Adam Lustick and Anne Dudek). As Matt and Jake navigate an ever-revolving series of disasters their only ally is Grace (Aparna Nancherla), a Hampton DeVille Human Resources rep who is beleaguered by both her job and her exhausting relationship with the very needy Matt and Jake. Tonight is the series premiere of Black Card Revoked on BET at 10/9c. Based on the party game of the same name, the nostalgia-filled show will test players’ knowledge of the nuances of the African American perspective — from pop culture milestones and entertainment moments to historical facts and politics. Actor and comedian Tony Rock will host the series, bringing his signature quick-witted style to the game play and challenging the contestants. Since its creation by Cards For All People in 2015, Black Card Revoked has set social media on fire and quickly become a fixture at home parties. Although the African American experience is far from monolithic, the game is a lighthearted nod to the shared commonalities of Black life in America. If you know the answer to questions like “How many fights did the Fresh Prince get into before his mom got scared?”, your metaphorical “Black Card” will stay intact (“1 little fight,” of course). But if you’ve never seen The Color Purple or Friday, you might get your card snatched! As a witty celebration of African American life, the show will appeal to all lovers of Black culture, bringing together viewers from diverse walks of life for a fun night of laughter and spirited debate. Each 30-minute episode will feature three (3) teams — each with a celebrity and contestant partner — answering questions about universal pop culture and historical moments, viewed through the African American lens. The teams will square off and put their figurative “Black Cards” on the line for a chance to win up to $10,000.

Tonight is also the series premiere of BET’s Mancave on BET at 10:30/9:30c. Singer/songwriter and actor Tank, comedian Gerald “Slink” Johnson (Black Jesus) and hit-making producer Marcos “Kosine” Palacios join previously announced TV personality and Executive Producer Jeff Johnson as the official cast. This progressive new talk format assembles a diverse group of black men who will share unadulterated and provocative views about life, love, politics, sex, pop culture and more. Through humor, genuine emotion and heated debate, the cast will discuss their own opinions and experiences, while revealing what it’s really like to navigate the world as an African-American man. These outspoken men will kick back and get transparent about today’s hot-button topics. Four guys. Different worlds. Lots of opinions.

Tonight is the series premiere of Gold Rush: White Water on Discovery Channel at 10/9c. Dakota Fred and his son Dustin are down on their luck. But the “Dakota Boys” aren’t quitters. They have one last roll of the dice. In this all-new series, the Dakota Boys put together a team of intrepid divers, mountaineers and bush mechanics to go where no miner has ever managed to explore — the depths of freezing plunge pools in white water rapids that have only recently become accessible. Nothing will stop these guys — they’ll dive in raging torrents with a six-inch suction dredge where one wrong move could have deadly consequences. This is gold mining at its most extreme. Accessing the creek each day takes nerves of steel — traversing a death defying 400-foot canyon on a precarious zip-wire. But that is not the only danger. The guys will face wild animals, extreme temperatures and hypothermia from the freezing water. But the Dakota Boys will need to make a serious return on fellow gold miner Todd Hoffman’s investment — and soon. The pressure is on. But can the Dakota Boys tame the wilderness, strike gold and make it out unscathed?

Saturday

Saturday is the series premiere of Planet Earth: Blue Planet II on BBC America at 9/8c. Presented by Sir David Attenborough and scored by Academy Award-winner Hans Zimmer, Planet Earth: Blue Planet II takes viewers on a revelatory and magical journey into the mesmerizing world of our oceans — by turn tempestuous and serene, exquisitely beautiful and bleakly forbidding. They cover 70% of the Earth’s surface and hold 97% of all the water in the world. There is more life in the deep sea than anywhere else on Earth, and it is said we know more about the surface of Mars than the depths of our own planet. Our final frontier is the deep ocean – Earth’s “inner space.” By using breakthroughs in science and cutting-edge technology to explore this final frontier, the series reveals the astonishing characters, otherworldly places and extraordinary new animal behaviors. Warm and compelling stories about marine habitats and their characterful inhabitants will leave you emotionally invested in our oceans and the creatures who dwell there, and bring a whole new perspective to this little-known world. Over four years in production, the teams mounted 125 expeditions, visited 39 countries, and filmed on every continent and across every ocean. They spent over 6,000 hours diving underwater, filming everywhere from familiar shores to the deepest seas.

Tonight is also the series premiere of Say Yes: Wedding SOS on TLC at 9/8c. The show will focus on transforming couples who have let themselves go. From every-day life challenges including balancing kids and work and trying to keep that special spark alive, the couples featured on the show are in desperate need of a makeover for their special day. In each hour-long episode, style expert George Kotsiopoulos will work with the bride and groom and get them ready to walk down the aisle. From wardrobe and hair to veneers and tattoo removal, the couple will meet each other at the altar in front of their friends and family with a new look and, most importantly, renewed confidence as they head off into wedded bliss. Viewers will go along for the ride as they watch the couples go from drab to fab from custom suit fittings, liposuction, corrective eye surgery, microblading and laser hair removal, just to name a few.

Finally, tonight is a new episode of Saturday Night Live on NBC at 11:29/10:29c, with host Jessica Chastain and musical guest Troye Sivan.

Ack. I left myself a note to remember next week. Sometimes my source is a little confusing, and I think it doesn’t show up as new for me, even if it is. I’ll double check next time. Thanks. 🙂
