Tonight is the series premiere of Curse of Akakor on Facebook Watch at 9/8c. The show follows six investigators deep into the Amazon jungle on the search for a lost city and the answer to a chilling question: why does almost everyone who chases the Akakor legend go missing? Three explorers on three different expeditions disappeared in the 1980s while seeking a lost city of gold called Akakor and its sister city, Akahim. A fourth explorer was murdered in mysterious circumstances just before embarking on his expedition. For almost 40 years, the disappearances and murder have remained unexplained. To finally uncover the truth, investigative journalist Paul Connolly, former FBI agent Bobby Chacon, tech expert Brennon Edwards, survival expert Megan Hine, wilderness doctor Dr. Karina Oliani, and geologist/explorer Dr. Martin Pepper are following in the footsteps of those ill-fated expeditions. Armed with the latest technology and guided by ancient clues, they have a dual mission: to search for evidence of the lost cities and to discover what happened to the explorers who never came back.

Tonight is also the 2-hour series premiere of The Food That Built America on History Channel at 9/8c. For generations of Americans, food titans like Henry Heinz, Milton Hershey, John and Will Kellogg, C.W. Post, and the McDonald brothers have literally been household names, but you don’t know their stories. Before they were brand names, they were brilliant, sometimes ruthless, visionaries who revolutionized food and changed the landscape of America forever. This miniseries event will tell the fascinating stories of the people behind the food that built America – those who used brains, muscle, blood, sweat and tears to get to America’s heart through its stomach, and along the way built cities, invented new technologies and helped win wars.

Finally, tonight is the series premiere of Strange World on Travel Channel at 10/9c. Independent filmmaker Christopher Garetano, whose award-winning film Montauk Chronicles inspired the hit show Stranger Things, has spent a lifetime searching for the truth behind some of America’s most unusual stories. Now, he begins a boots-on-the-ground investigation into the legends, mysteries, and first-person accounts that fuel this country’s creepiest conspiracy theories and unexplained occurrences. Over the course of eight hour-long episodes, Garetano will immerse himself in a world of the weird and bizarre, exploring everything from the alleged curse of James Dean’s death car, Little Bastard, to the extraordinary and unexplained disappearances on California’s Mount Shasta, to the legend of Polybius, a 1980’s arcade game supposedly created as a mind-control experiment gone amuck.

Overnight last night, Netflix premiered the complete first season of Tiffany Haddish Presents: They Ready. Hand-picked by Tiffany Haddish, six diverse comedians showcase their raw humor in a series of specials oozing with energy.

Tonight is also the series premiere of Mysteries Decoded on The CW at 9/8c. This investigative documentary series delves deeper into some of America’s greatest unsolved mysteries.

Tonight is also the series premiere of Supermarket Stakeout on Food Network at 10/9c. This is a competition where blind luck, negotiation, and cooking skills are the key ingredients to success. Hosted by Iron Chef and Chopped judge Alex Guarnaschelli, each episode kicks off with a culinary ambush outside a local supermarket, where four competing chefs approach unsuspecting shoppers leaving the store to negotiate the bags right out of their hands — without knowing what’s inside. Over three rounds of themed culinary challenges and with a budget of only $500, the chefs are limited to using the items they can wrangle out of the customer’s carts using their charm, persuasiveness, and a little cash. A rotating panel of judges determines which challengers had the most successful dishes using the acquired ingredients, with the last chef standing in each episode walking away with enough cash for a year’s worth of groceries.

Tonight is the series premiere of Black Ink Crew Compton on VH1 at 10/9c. The show follows Danny “KP” Kirkpatrick and his crew at IAMCompton, the first-ever tattoo shop in Compton. Compton, known for its musical influence and iconic street art, is an artistic melting-pot ready for the newest tat crew to share their talent. KP, famed tattoo artist and visionary, is bringing his team of artists into the community and are using their creative energy to make a change while creating a “safe zone” in the city he calls home. At IAMCompton, KP has assembled a dream team of tattoo artists, friends and new additions to build a trusted family at the shop that has become known as “a crew among gangs.” Their mission is to create a movement in Compton through their creative collective by celebrating the talent, passion and rich culture of the community. The crew is here to represent the city in a way that rises above the stereotypes and embraces the rich culture of Compton. The IAMCompton artists confront identity crisis and social conflicts by channeling their imagination into body art and comradery. But with the pressure to succeed and represent their home, will they reinvent their community or fall under pressure?

Tonight is also the series premiere of Danny’s House on Viceland at 10/9c, followed by a 2nd new episode at 10:30/9:30c. This is a delightfully trippy new comedy series with hip-hop star Danny Brown. An endlessly creative, critically acclaimed and comedic Detroit hip-hop force, Brown hosts the weekly psychedelic slumber party Danny’s House. Combining the cozy energy of Mister Rogers, the unpredictability of Eric Andre, and the friendly basement hang of Wayne’s World, populated with wild neighbors and characters reminiscent of Pee-Wee’s Playhouse (e.g. a voyeuristic telescope and talking burrito). Celebrity guests are invited to hang out in the basement (and mind) of Brown to talk about a specific theme each episode. For the eight-episode series, Brown’s guests include: rappers A$AP Rocky, Schoolboy Q, El-P, and fellow Detroiters the Insane Clown Posse; comedians Ron Funches, Ilana Glazer, Nikki Glaser, Hannibal Buress and Gilbert Gottfried; as well as NBA Champion John Salley, UFC fighter Joanne Calderwood and WWE wrestler Hacksaw Jim Duggan and more. Episode topics running the gamut from U.F.O.’s, ghosts and A.I. to high school, dreams, music, fighting and style.

Tonight is also the series premiere of David Makes Man on OWN at 10/9c. The show centers on a 14-year-old prodigy from the projects who is haunted by the death of his closest friend and relied on by his hardworking mother to find a way out of poverty. He must choose between the streets that raised him or the higher education that may offer him a way out. It stars Akili McDowell and Phylicia Rashad, as well as Ade Chike Torbert, Alana Arenas, Cayden K. Williams, Elvis Nolasco, Gillian Williams, Isaiah Johnson, Jordan Bolger, Nathaniel Logan McIntyre, Randy Gonzalez, Ruben Santiago-Hudson, & Travis Coles.

Overnight last night, CBS All-Access (CBSAA) premiered the first episode of Why Women Kill. This darkly comedic drama, created by Marc Cherry (Desperate Housewives, Devious Maids), details the lives of three women living in three different decades: a housewife in the ’60s, a socialite in the ’80s, and a lawyer in 2019, each dealing with infidelity in their marriages. The series will examine how the roles of women have changed but how their reaction to betrayal…has not. It stars Lucy Liu (Elementary, Dirty Sexy Money, Cashmere Mafia), Ginnifer Goodwin (Big Love, Once Upon a Time), and Kirby Howell-Baptiste (Veronica Mars, The Good Place). The cast also includes Adam Ferrara (Rescue Me, Top Gear), Jack Davenport (Flash Forward, Prototype, Smash, Swingtown, White Famous), Sam Jaeger (Eli Stone, Law & Order True Crime, Parenthood, Tell Me a Story), Reid Scott (My Boys, Veep), Sadie Calvano (Mom, Village People, Suspicion), Leo Howard (Kickin’ It), Alicia Coppola (Blood & Treasure, Cold Feet, Framed, Jericho), Katie Finneran (Bloodline, The Michael J. Fox Show, I Hate My Teenage Daughter), & Alexandra Daddario.
