Tonight, Supergirl returns to The CW to kick off its fifth season. As the fourth season came to close, Supergirl was up against Lex Luthor, who had made himself look like the hero, “saving” the country from an alien attack, and using Red Daughter to try to kill Supergirl. For his heroism, the president had named Lex the new Director of Alien Affairs. However, it turned out that Lex was harnessing the aliens’ powers to create batteries, which he planned to utilize to blow up the planet Argus, along with Superman. It was up to Supergirl to expose Lex’s evil plan, which she did as Kara via a written expose. However, Lex was still moving forward with his plan, and the group gathered to stop him from launching his weapon. Meanwhile, Ben Lockwood also showed up, looking to fight Supergirl. During the commotion, Red Daughter took a blast of Kryptonite while trying to protect Supergirl and was killed. Supergirl reabsorbed her clone, and this extra burst of power allowed her to blast Lex and his Lexosuit, sending him hurdling toward Earth. He managed to create a portal into his lap before he exploded into the Earth. However, Lena showed up and shot Lex. As he lay dying, Lex revealed Kara’s big secret to Lena, who was shocked and felt betrayed. In the final moments of the episode, The Monitor arrived through a portal, greeting a Green Martian, who was plotting revenge on his brother, J’onn J’onzz. We then saw The Monitor hovering over Lex’s cold body… It looks like this will not be the end for Lex!

So how will learning Kara’s secret change Lena? Will she turn to the dark side with her brother? Will she plot some kind of revenge against Supergirl? When will she tell Kara that she knows? What new villains and threats await Supergirl and her DEO/superhero crew this season?

At this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, I got the chance to talk about the series with some of the executive producers and cast members. You can watch my interview videos from the press room at NoReruns.net.

On tonight’s premiere, “Event Horizon,” Kara is surprised to find that CatCo has a new owner who has brought in a star reporter; new couples emerge and explore their budding relationships; J’onn J’onzz receives an unexpected visitor.

Find out who now owns CatCo and who visits J’onn J’onzz tonight on The CW at 9/8c.

I’ll also be watching/recording The Rookie, The Simpsons, Bless the Harts, Bob’s Burgers, Family Guy, Batwoman, The Walking Dead, Mr. Robot, and Succession.

One of the best adaptation/dark comedy shows on TV the last two years, imho, has been Get Shorty, which returns tonight amidst a tsunami of other returning shows and otherwise brilliant new streaming media. Though this incarnation of the tale differs greatly from both the movie production and the original book, this show has taken the theme of mobsters getting into Hollywood to a sublime level of well-paced, exciting, and tragicomic storytelling. Last year’s finale saw our antihero Miles stuck in prison for numerous instances, wherein he took the “mob” route in a Tinsel Town interaction. His attitude paid off for a while but eventually caught up with him. The same escalation has left movie producer Rick Morehead in a minimum-security prison as well.

Being stuck in the clink didn’t stop Miles from finding a way to work on his second big movie, “Wilderness.” He cut a deal with the prison’s main boss, a Mexican gangster named Swayze, which enabled him to get notes on the film to and from April, using Avi as a courier. Notably, the cuts in this episode were almost always bridged with this electrifying, anxious drum solo. Yago, stuck in the same prison as Miles, asked Swayze’s men if they might keep the guy who tried to shiv him away. Upon telling the tale of Amara and the way she whacked the Banana Girl out of jealousy, Rick found funding for his next two movies in his jail stint. Miles & Yago received the hitman’s penis in a jar to their mixed horror/satisfaction. Louis was nearly arrested for violating his house arrest while Gladys went into labor in their home.

Then…

“One Year Later”

Rick got out of prison and was almost reluctant to leave. The FBI warned him Amara may have a hit out on him. April was mortified but must had to tell Miles that his name had been taken off the film. This stung especially hard after everyone saw how well the film was being lauded in reviews. Executive producer Lawrence Budd had no clue how April had been sneaking all of Miles’s ideas into the film clandestinely. Miles called Budd from prison, collect, to threaten him subtly. Amara sent Rick a ticket to meet her in Guatemala, and like an idiot, he went to see her. Miles sent Budd the severed penis in a pickle jar. Just when we thought Miles was about to get busted for that, we saw it was just a prank by Swayze and the gang, who had snuck in a copy of the finished movie to watch. The music finally switched up for the outro credits as our drum solo gave way to an aggressive Mexican gangster rap song. Omens of the season that starts tonight. I think Miles has another hit up his sleeves. Can’t wait to watch!!!

On tonight’s episode, “What to Do When You Land,” news travels fast that Miles Daley has been released from prison and he has made a plan for retaliation.

Find out how the news spreads tonight on Epix at 10/9c.

I will also be glued to the screen for the Batwoman premiere, Bob’s Burgers, the Supergirl premiere, Mr. Robot’s premiere, On Becoming A God In Central Florida, Star Wars Resistance, and Ballers.

Tonight, The CW premieres yet another member of the popular Arrowverse: Batwoman. There are many who are anxiously awaiting this premiere because it is making television history with Ruby Rose (Orange Is the New Black, Pitch Perfect 3), portraying Kate Kane, who is set to be the first openly lesbian superhero lead character. Batwoman was first introduced into the Arrowverse during last season’s big crossover event, Elseworlds, which included the shows Supergirl, Arrow and The Flash. Throughout all the chaos of Elseworlds, our favourite superheroes Supergirl (Melissa Benoist), Green Arrow (Stephen Amell), and The Flash (Grant Gustin) found themselves in the well-known Gotham City…where they received some assistance from the previously unheard of Batwoman. Rest assured if this superhero is anything like she appeared in Elseworlds, we are in for an incredible first season.

On tonight’s Batwoman premiere, watch as Kate Kane returns to Gotham when she hears word that her father and ex-girlfriend, Sophie Moore, are being targeted by a gang.

To see if Batwoman can live up to everyone’s expectations and Arrowverse standard, tune in to The CW at 8/7c.

I’ll also be watching God Friended Me, Supergirl, The Rookie, and NCIS: LA.
