If We Controlled Your Remote… 1/16/20

Have you ever been at a loss as to what to watch? Too many shows to pick from? We’re here to give you our opinions on what we feel is worth watching. Check it out and then let us know in the comments below what you’re choosing for tonight!

Kyle’s Choice

Tonight, Freeform kicks off the fun new single-camera comedy Everything’s Gonna Be Okay with a special 90-minute premiere. Twenty-five-year-old Nicholas (Josh Thomas, Please Like Me) had been living in Australia with his mother. Nearly 17 years ago, his parents got divorced after his father had a daughter with another woman. His father moved to America, got remarried, and had a second daughter, but the girls’ mother passed away when they were young.

Seventeen-year-old Matilda is autistic and marches to the beat of her own drum. She doesn’t really get social cues or boundaries and just says what’s on her mind – if she likes the most popular boy in school, she’ll just come right out and tell him, even though he may be out of her league. Matilda is smart and artistic, and it seems like she can do anything she sets her mind to. Her younger sister, 14-year-old Genevieve, is at an awkward age. She has just become a woman and is just trying to fit in at school and stay under the radar, along with the help of her two best friends. The girls’ half-brother Nicholas is just about to head back to Australia when his father drops the news that he is dying and doesn’t have much time left. Nicholas has never been the most reliable or mature guy, so his father never really considered him as a serious possibility to take over guardianship of his siblings, but Nicholas assures him and insists that he can do it. And so, shortly afterwards, Nicholas finds himself thrust into this new situation, trying to be the adult, taking care of two teenage girls, while also trying to balance his own personal life with boyfriend Alex (Adam Faison, Liberty Crossing).

While the series is a fun show about teenage problems and family, I wouldn’t say that all of the humor and situations are necessarily family friendly. Freeform was smart to drop that “ABC Family” name a while back, as a lot of its programming has become geared toward a slightly more mature audience. I had never seen Josh Thomas’s previous acclaimed series, Please Like Me, so I was unfamiliar with his style of comedy. Nicholas is neurotic and self-absorbed, with an odd, awkward sense of humor that sometimes borders on becoming annoying. However, you can tell that he truly cares about his sisters. The relationship between these siblings is a lot of fun, and tonight’s episodes had me laughing quite a bit. There’s lots of physical humor with Nicholas and many laugh-out-loud moments coming from the autistic Matilda, who delivers one the funniest, most inappropriate eulogies for her deceased father. It looks like the series will balance the stories of the girls dealing with typical teenage and school problems and the loss of their father, with Nicholas trying to become a more responsible adult and father-like figure, while also attempting to have a love life. I’m look forward to seeing more of this oddball series.

On tonight’s series premiere, “Seven-Spotted Ladybug,” Nicholas’s single dad has very bad cancer and he’s going to die soon; so Nicholas offers himself up to be the guardian for his two teenage half-sisters. Then, in “Greenbottle Blue Tarantula,” Nicholas wishes he could call an adult; after the death of their father, Nicholas, Matilda, and Genevieve struggle to return to their daily – and nightly – routines; navigating the stay-at-home parent life is harder than Nicholas thought.

Don’t miss the one-hour premiere and 30-minute second episode on Freeform starting at 8:30/7:30c.

I’ll also be watching/recording Young Sheldon, The Unicorn, Carol’s Second Act, Evil, Superstore, The Good Place, Will & Grace, Perfect Harmony, and Deputy.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 1/15/20

Have you ever been at a loss as to what to watch? Too many shows to pick from? We’re here to give you our opinions on what we feel is worth watching. Check it out and then let us know in the comments below what you’re choosing for tonight!

Jenny’s Choice

I’m still not feeling great, but I did want to highlight the premiere of
68 Whiskey
tonight on Paramount. This comes from Ron Howard’s Imagine Television Studios and follows a multicultural band of Army medics stationed in Afghanistan on a base nicknamed “The Orphanage.” Together, the medics navigate a dangerous and sometimes absurd world, relying on comradery, various vices and, occasionally, a profound sense of purpose to carry them through. I really like the cast – most especially Beth Riesgraf (Leverage, Lovestruck, Insatiable, Complications) & Derek Theler (Baby Daddy, Marvel’s New Warriors).

It also stars Sam Keeley, Jeremy Tardy (Dear White People, Marvel’s New Warriors), Gage Golightly (Red Oaks, Heartland, The End of the World As We Know It), Cristina Rodlo (Too Old to Die Young), Lamont Thompson (Hell on Earth), Nicholas Coombe (Imaginary Mary), Aaron Glenane (Snowpiercer), Artur Benson, Jade Albany (The Naked Director, The Right Stuff), Linc Hand, & Usman Ally (Lovestruck, On Becoming a God in Central Florida).

This should be a mix of intense drama and irreverent humor, which usually makes for good TV. And I like the premise of the Army medics stationed overseas. I wonder if this will be a bit like a more dramatic version of M.A.S.H. from the 70s, which was set during the Korean War. I didn’t watch that one – I was only born in 1976, and I never did watch reruns – but it was hugely popular. We’ll see if that similar premise goes over well now.

On tonight’s episode, “Buckley’s Goat,” Roback convinces Davis to join him in a get-rich-quick scheme, which lands them in serious trouble; Alvarez gets some upsetting news; Roback and Durkin continue their secret affair; Petrocelli finds a new friend in a lost goat.

Meet these new Army medics and see their temporary home of the Orphanage tonight on Paramount at 10/9c.

I’ll also be watching Chicago Med, The Goldbergs, Schooled, Chicago Fire, Criminal Minds, Guy’s Grocery Games, Modern Family, Single Parents, Chicago PD, S.W.A.T., & Stumptown.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 1/14/20

Have you ever been at a loss as to what to watch? Too many shows to pick from? We’re here to give you our opinions on what we feel is worth watching. Check it out and then let us know in the comments below what you’re choosing for tonight!

Megan’s Choice

One thing that the Arrowverse shows do better than almost any other group of shows is crossovers, and the “Crisis on Infinite Earths” crossover has been epic in proportion, with a whopping five episodes. The first three episodes aired before Christmas, and we have been waiting, not so patiently, for the final two episodes that air tonight.

In the first three episodes, there was a lot that happened, so I’ll just give you a brief recap so that you are caught up enough for tonight’s episodes, but I do highly recommend that you watch the first three parts because it has been an incredible block of television.

The heroes gathered on Earth 38 because an anti-matter wave was set to hit there next after already taking out Argo, with the last of the Kryptonians. The heroes tried to stop the wave and made a stand against the Anti-Monitor’s army, but the Monitor later declared it a lost cause and started to force them to retreat. However, Oliver refused to leave and fought until his bitter end to save as many lives from Earth 38 as he could. Unfortunately, he later paid the ultimate price when his took his last breath, surrounded by many shattered family members and friends.

Mia and Barry struggled to accept Oliver’s death and enlisted Sarah’s help in resurrecting him. However, he told them to let him go and that he knew was destined for something greater. We were graced with the guest appearances of Constantine and Lucifer during this episode, which was strange but exciting for the viewers. Elsewhere, Supergirl and Batwoman attempted to locate the Paragon of Courage, who after some interesting moments turned out to be Batwoman herself. During this episode, we also saw Tom Welling, who was Clark Kent from Smallville, but we found out that he had given up his powers in order to be a dad.

When we left off at the end of the last episode, the seven paragons were all that were left standing after an anti-matter wave wiped out the whole universe. The shocking twist was that the Lex Luther replaced Brandon Routh’s Superman as the Paragon of Truth after Lex got his hands on the Book of Destiny.

Whew. Are you still as confused as I am? Thankfully tonight will bring us much-needed closure and answers!

First up on Arrow, “Crisis on Infinite Earth Part Four,” stuck in the Vanishing Point, the Paragons search for a way to escape. The futility of the situation is compounded by The Flash’s disappearance. However, hope appears in the form of Oliver, who reveals that he has become something else. Meanwhile, the origin stories for The Monitor and Anti-Monitor are revealed.

Then we conclude with DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, with “Crisis on Infinite Earth Part Five,” and we are left with the fact that Worlds lived, worlds died. Nothing will ever be the same.

Tune in for the beginning of the end on The CW starting at 8/7c.

I’ll also be watching This Is Us, FBI, The Resident, NCIS, Ellen’s Game of Games, FBI: Most Wanted, New Amsterdam, and Gordon’s Ramsay’s 24 Hours to Hell and Back.
