If We Controlled Your Remote… 5/26/14

Happy Memorial Day! Before I talk TV, I just want to remind everyone to remember those men and women who gave their lives while serving in the armed forces. Men and women in the military have a hard, often thankless job, and they and their families deserve to be remembered. As for TV, it’s a slow night tonight, but there’s some great, fun stuff on, so check out what we’re recommending.

amninjasmallAmerican Ninja Warrior is back, baby! I love this show. If you haven’t seen it, it’s the American version of a Japanese competition, where men and women across the country run an insane series of obstacle courses in both qualifying and final rounds before the national finals in Las Vegas for a chance to win a cash prize of $500,00 and the title “American Ninja Warrior.” The challenges are just seriously insane, and the contestants are amazing. This season, there will be school teachers, firemen, current and former members of the military, amateur sports enthusiasts, and even a few Olympic gold medalists competing for the chance to go to Vegas, where they face the hardest course yet: modeled after the famed Mt. Midoriyama in Japan. Just as a side note… There are additional episodes that will air on Esquire this season. (Last season, they were on G4.) On the next episode on NBC, they will show highlights from the Esquire episode, but I recommend watching those episodes as well. They will air the day after each NBC episode.

Tonight is a 2-part episode. The first is a one-hour special, “Countdown to American Ninja Warrior 2014,” where they count down the most exciting moments of the series. Then, on the 2-hour season premiere, “Venice Beach Qualifying,” competitors must tackle ten obstacles in the qualifying round including three brand new obstacles; the Slack Ladder, the Jumping Bars Into Cargo, and the Cannonball Alley. Olympian rower Susan Francia and luger Kate Hanson tackle the course along with Ninja veteran David Campbell.

See all the action tonight on NBC at 8/7c & 9/8c.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 9/9/13

It’s been an eventful weekend around here, with my little guy Pherson going in for some minor surgery. He’s doing well and is almost back to himself—then hopefully, we’ll all sleep a bit more! While I count down the hours to bedtime, let’s see what’s on to keep us amused.

amninjasmallAmerican Ninja Warrior has become a family favorite around here. They are equally amazed when they complete the course as they are when they fall. My daughter’s favorite part is when someone seems too confident, and then they fall on something that should have been easy. (Honestly, I like that part too!) This course they’re on now for the finals is pretty tough, and I’m amazed at the strength some of these competitors have. I’m a little disappointed that there have been no females finishing the finals course, but who knows what is to come next year.

On tonight’s episode, “Vegas Finals,” the top finishers from the regional finals face a course modeled after Mount Midoriyama in Japan.

To see how the remaining athletes measure up, tune in to NBC at 9/8c.

I’ll also be watching The Million Second Quiz, Mistresses, and Diners, Drive-ins and Dives.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 9/2/13

Normally, this is where I’d say it was time to get back to work, but luckily, today is Labor Day, which means one extra day—or if you’re my husband, one extra day of three because he took two days of vacation, too. That means we get to catch up on TV, including the great new episodes on tonight. So check out what we’re recommending for you.

amninjasmallI’m so mad about my pick for last week. Jim was shot by a mystery person (Ray? Ray’s mother?) before he could get to the church, leaving Callie alone at the alter, so to speak. The season ended with that…and it turned out, the series ended with that, as well, since it was canceled. Bah!

Now that I’ve grouched about that, don’t let it keep you from enjoying this week’s choice. 😉 My husband & I are really enjoying American Ninja Warrior, that’s been airing on G4 and NBC. We’re smack dab in the middle of Stage 1 of Mount Midoriyama, and let tell me…it’s been a bear! Insanely fun and hard challenges—I think the Giant Cycle looks REALLY fun, but the Jumping Spider has taken out the most contestants so far in the finals. And the last episode was heartbreaking, with one of the athletes hitting the buzzer .03 seconds too late to move on. The worst part was that they broke the news to him—after he’d already thought he’d made it through—on camera. He was devastated.

On tonight’s episode, “Vegas Finals,” the show continues the competition from Las Vegas, Nevada, where the top finishers from the regional finals tackle the ultimate challenge: a four-stage course modeled after “Mount Midoriyama” in Japan. Competitors will attempt Stage 1, which includes three brand new obstacles: the Giant Cycle, Rope Glider, and the Timbers. The finalists will vie to win a cash prize of $500,000 and the title of “American Ninja Warrior.”

To see who makes it through Stage 1, tune in to the two-hour episode on NBC at 8/7c.

I’ll also be watching/DVRing Diners, Drive-ins & Dives & The Shed.

warehouse1371smallOh dang. Warehouse 13 is kicking it into high gear leading into next week’s season finale. It doesn’t seem possible that we have 8 episodes to go, including tonight’s penultimate episode. Last week, we learned more about Charlotte Dupres (the Countess of St. Germaine) and Nick…her son. It doesn’t seem like they’re the bad guys I was expecting them to be, unless we haven’t yet seen everything we need to see. It wasn’t Nick who bronzed Claudia. It was the evil alchemist, Paracelsus, who Nick de-bronzed and set free. I know Nick and Charlotte supposedly need him to help break the curse of immortality, but this guy seems like BAD news. Claudia is in a bad way. She wasn’t bronzed or stored correctly, so she’s dying, even though the bronzing process is supposed to prevent that. Also last week, Myka admitted to Pete about her cancer diagnosis. It was a heartwrenching moment—especially after seeing her funny daydreams about his possible reactions.

On tonight’s episode, “All the Time in the World,” time is quickly running out in the Warehouse 13 team’s search for the evil alchemist who bronzed Claudia and stole the only artifact that can reverse the condition—and it seems Mrs. Frederic and the Warehouse are affected, too.

Find out if the team can save Claudia tonight and the futures of their fearless, mysterious leader & the Warehouse too on Syfy at 10/9c.

If We Controlled Your Remote… 5/28/12

I can’t believe that May is almost over. Summer is coming up on us quickly. This is a slow week in TV, but enjoy it because the hectic summer TV schedule is going to be on us next week! Let’s take a look at what you should be watching tonight.

America’s Got Talent is all new this week, and I have to admit that I find Howard Stern amusing. Sure, he’s a little crass at times, but at heart, he’s a softie. There has been some odd talent this year so far – and I’m not sure what being able to withstand being hit in the testicles by a hammer has to do with talent, but it made for amusing television. (Although I’m not sure he’s ever having any more children.)

On tonight’s episode, auditions continue as Howard, Howie, Sharon, and Nick head to Tampa/St. Petersburg, Florida, with an eye out for the acts that could take the million-dollar prize.

To see what kind of talent we find in Florida, tune in to NBC at 8/7c. Learn where to find episodes online of America’s Got Talent @ Clicker.

Tonight, I’ll also be watching Cake Boss.
