Phoebe’s Choice

Listen, Star Trek: Picard is good. It’s like the best of Star Trek and the best of Star Wars sorta mashed up in what is definitely the old TNG timeline, pre-reboot movies. After the alleged daughter of Data came to him for help, she was assassinated by a Romulan sect known as the Tal Shiar. She had a twin sister however, and she was out there somewhere, so Picard was on a quest to find her. He recruited an old friend from Star Fleet, Raffi, and her friend the star pilot, Rios. Rios played as “intellectual Han Solo” to me. We also added android scientist Dr. Agnes Jurati at the last minute as they were departing Earth.

Last week, instead of heading directly to the lead they have to follow up on on Freecloud, Picard had Rios charter a course to the Romulan resettlement world of Vashti, where Jean Luc once lived. He revisited the Qowat Milat, who were an order of ass-kicking nuns. He recruited the help of Elnar, who was the only male raised by the nuns. They got off planet together just in time for the ship to be attacked by local warlords. This was where the Star Wars–like action kicked in. Very few Trek films or shows have featured such intricate, fast, and masterfully pulled off outer space combat. Perhaps Discovery had some battles that were as cool, but these are the next gen shows, and starships have grown much more agile in this continuum fo’ show. They barely won this battle with the help of a mystery battler on a small A-Wing sized ship. When beaming that person aboard, they got the next recruit to the team: Seven of Nine!

Meanwhile, out on a defunct Borg cube, the lost twin sister, Soji, was part of a strange reclamation project. They are salvaging Romulans by taking Borg parts out of them then rehabilitating them as pure organic beings. The process didn’t work on all victims equally however, and she was trying to find out what happened with the particular batch of the misfits she happened upon in her research. The Romulan she was cavorting with promised her access to information, but at the same time, his contact in the Tal Shiar threatened to use force if his subversive tactics didn’t pay off soon.

This show moves quick, is a lot of fun, and features aspects of all kinds of Star Trek cannon. Don’t miss out!

Catch this week’s episode, “Stardust City Rag,” now on CBSAA.

I’ll also be tuning in for How the Universe Works & Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

Two of my favorite actors to watch on TV are Jason Biggs (American Pie movie franchise) and Maggie Lawson (Psych), and tonight they’re starring in the new FOX comedy Outmatched. The premise is really fun: Two ordinary, blue-collar, working-class parents are raising four children…three of whom are geniuses. It’s a hard life trying to nurture their children’s amazing minds while not able to keep up with or understand them. They’re determined to give all of their kids as normal a childhood as possible, but for the three big-brained kiddos, that’s more difficult than either parent anticipates.

The show also stars Tisha Campbell (Dr. Ken, My Wife and Kids), Jack Stanton (The Mick), Connor Kalopsis (The Grinder), Ashley Boettcher (Lost in Oz), and Oakley Bull (Beautiful Boy).

I’ve seen tonight’s premiere, and it’s a lot of fun. Biggs and Lawson play off each other well, and you can see their love for their kids, even though most of the time they’re scared spitless of them as well. I really enjoyed it and am looking forward to more.

On tonight’s episode, “Pilot,” Kay and Mike cope with raising three high-IQ children.

Don’t miss tonight’s premiere on FOX at 8:30/7:30c.

I’ll also be watching Last Man Standing, Deputy, Will & Grace, Perfect Harmony, & Beat Bobby Flay.

Jenny’s Choice #1

On the previous episode of SEAL Team, the team jumped out of the plane in order to hike to their target, but Ray’s chute didn’t open. It took a while for them to figure out that his backup HAD opened, but they believed he’d landed in enemy territory. The higher-ups said to finish their objective and Ray would meet them at the exit point. But Jason and the others talked to Blackburn and got the okay to go into enemy territory and find him. It was a very good thing they did, because it wasn’t long before he was found and on the run. Although I did love him hanging in the tree and trying not to move while the two men were below him. If it weren’t for the dang knife he’d dropped! While on the run, Ray sneaked into a small village (which made me very happy to live where I do…) and ended up taking a woman hostage when she walked into her home and found him. He threatened her life if she yelled out to the other villagers, but his crisis of faith finally came to a head when (I think?) she started praying. He realized he couldn’t just execute her, that if this was God’s plan, then he’d either get caught or escape before she could alert them. He finally let her go and ran out the back, and just before he could get captured or killed, his team appeared. Then Mandy spoke to her counterpart in that area and was able to convince her (ie: bribe her with the leaked location of a terrorist her country wanted, even though Mandy giving her the location would be without her boss’s boss’s boss’s or whatever consent) to send in a rescue helicopter to grab the team – and grab them they did. They lowered a rope, and each member clipped themselves to it, and off it went, the team flying on the rope in a row below it! It was awesome.

Other big news was Stella came to visit Clay to see how he was doing. He told her all about Swanny and the fight he’s now undertaken on Swanny’s behalf. It was a good visit, and I actually have hope that MAYBE there will be a reunion between the two of them. Clay also visited his father in the hopes that maybe his dad will take the fight on himself and use his position at the public access TV to help out. And FINALLY, Lisa went to visit her sister in order to invite her to her OCS graduation, and the visit didn’t go well. Her sister blames her for their other sister’s death, and she was kind of a witch to Lisa. She didn’t show at the graduation, which meant Lisa had no one there to support her and see her graduate…until Clay slid into the reserved seat. It was a sweet moment.

So tonight’s finale… Stella and Ash Spencer are back, so hopefully we’ll see some movement on the Clay/Stella and Clay/Swanny’s medal/TBIs fronts. And Commander Shaw is back, which means he’s still going to try to split up the team. I mean, even if he does, it can’t last, since without the team, there wouldn’t be a show, and it’s already been renewed for next season. Still… I hope if he does split them up, it doesn’t last long into next season!

On tonight’s episode, “Never Out of the Fight,” Bravo team’s future is on the line when Commander Shaw recommends they be split up, but Jason’s unit has one final mission to prove him wrong.

Find out Commander Shaw’s decision tonight on CBS at 10/9c.

Last week was Gina’s last week at the 99 on Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Tying back to the previous episode, she took Jake’s advice and decided to spread her wings and fly. Much to Holt’s dismay, she didn’t have concrete plans for her future – basically anything that would then make her a millionaire. During his time with her, while they played game after game of chess, Holt tried to talk her out of it, but she stuck to her guns. The funniest part of the episode was Gina and Jake trying to get to Mario Lopez at the Manhattan Club and then having him show up at the “hungry monkeys” party only to be turned away. It was a sweet episode, seeing her spend time with all (okay, most…poor Hitchcock & Sully. LOL) of them – or in Terry’s case, giving him a subscription to the Yogurts of the World Club.

I love this show, and I love that the move to NBC didn’t change it. It’s still the same show we’ve always known and loved – funny and quick=witted with a little bit of heart.

On tonight’s episode, “A Tale of Two Bandits,” Terry believes the Pontiac Bandit is stealing cars again, but Jake is convinced his friend wouldn’t do that. The rest of the squad fight to keep Shaw’s a police bar after some firemen stake their claim to it. Craig Robinson & Rob Riggle guest star.

See if Terry or Jake are correct about Doug Judy tonight on NBC at 9/8c.

I’ll also be watching/DVRing The Big Bang Theory, The Titan Games, Top Chef, Dr. Pimple Popper, Will & Grace, Beat Bobby Flay, & S.W.A.T.
