Recap/Review – Saving Hope – “Bea, Again” – 8/16/12

Before the Olympics, we left the show with Charlie being taken off life support. Questions about whether he will survive, whether he will wake up, and whether he will slowly fade away are all prominent in my mind, but there was other hospital and personal drama afoot. In the last episode, Joel dealt with a man devastated about his past. Being unable to stop the man from killing himself, Joel is in an emotional upheaval, leading him to tell Alex that he still loves her. Unfortunately, this was definitely the wrong time to tell her, leaving him to go out and chat up some girl and then get in a fight with the boyfriend, breaking his fist. As a doctor/surgeon, will this leave him incapacitated for the next few episodes? What of his relationship with Maggie? In Maggie’s life, as she is uncertain of her relationship with Joel, Gavin breaks the news that he likes her by suddenly kissing her. Is their friendship ruined? Will she realize that she actually likes him?

With so much stuff happening, this is sure to be an interesting first episode back, so let’s take a look after the jump… Continue reading

Recap/Review – Saving Hope – “Heartsick” – 7/26/12

Last week, we saw Alex’s dilemma after giving the family of a patient more hope than she should have, an unconscious patient Sanja and Charlie discussed love and relationships, and Dawn stirred up trouble about Charlie’s life or death discussions.

First Medical Case:

A dead man from the local prison comes in as a organ donor. While talking to Charlie, he reveals that he never signed an organ donor card. A young man with a loving fiancé needs a heart transplant, so they go into surgery immediately. Dawn is the heart transplant surgeon, even though she doesn’t work at this hospital, and with Alex in on the surgery, she tries to compromise Alex’s ability to assist in the operation by bringing up Charlie. Instead of getting emotional, Alex catches a bleed that Dawn didn’t see and is the only one able to fix it because only she has a good view of it.

After the surgery, the guy’s body starts rejecting the heart, which the prisoner frets is because of his having murdered people. Charlie highly doubts that is why the heart is being rejected, but after he gets emotional and breaks down when trying to let go of the bad in his heart, the transplant recipient starts getting better.

Recap/Review – Saving Hope – “Consenting Adults” – 7/20/12

Last week, we saw Alex thinking she was pregnant, Charlie fighting for the ability to communicate with Alex, Joel deciding to be exclusive with Maggie, Gavin creating a connection and trying to help a patient, and Alex dealing with a patient nobody else was able to diagnose.

First Medical Case:

Alex has a patient with what she thinks is a non-cancerous tumor that she quickly removes when there are complications. An adverse reaction to the anesthetic puts her in a coma, where she meets Charlie. Dana makes a really unnecessary comment to Alex that I dislike. She’s such a bitch. Later, after the mother and fiancé get upset that Alex lied to them about the simplicity of the surgery, it appears that Dana may be right. I’m surprised by how I feel about this because I still like Alex and completely understand her reaction, but I also agree with Dana. After frantically running around the hospital, she comes across Charlie, who helps her realize what is happening. What’s interesting about this case is Sanja doesn’t want to wake up. She likes the idea of just getting away from the arranged marriage that is supposed to occur on the coming weekend.

Recap/Review – Saving Hope – “The Great Randall” – 7/12/12

Last week, we saw Charlie contemplate the possibility of never waking up, Alex forgetting about Charlie during a party at her place, the reattachment of a man’s hands, Maggie saving a man who was wrongly diagnosed, and Alex fighting for her chance to be in the major surgery of the episode (proving herself to Dana).

First Medical Case:

A man comes into the ER from a car accident with an imbedded object in his abdomen, yet without any morphine, he isn’t complaining from pain, and he doesn’t remember his name. I love seeing Alex and Joel in surgery mode instead of worrying about drama or talking to patients, and when they get into this mode together, it’s even better. They seem to make a great team, supportive and helpful to each other. As they are describing what they will do in surgery, he quickly pulls out the rebar stuck into his side, causing him to pass out from the injuries he cannot feel. After they repair everything and he wakes up later, he still isn’t feeling any pain, and he’s still happy-go-lucky. In his personal belongings, they find a business card to The Great Randall, a hypnotist. Alex decides to call Gavin in to discuss hypnosis and see if he can break the trance this John Doe (or Mr. Happy, as they call him) is under, but it doesn’t work.

Recap/Review – Saving Hope – “Out of Sight” – 7/5/12

Last week, we learned Shahir was gay, confirmed our suspicions of Gavin’s crush on Maggie, saw some cute Joel/Alex moments, and saw Charlie force himself to fight his illness (and win).

First Medical Case:

A man who lost both his hands in a work injury is coming to the Hope-Zion for reattachment. With a team for both hands and a short timeframe on which to complete the reattachment, this looks to be quite the operation. As none of these double hand reattachment surgeries have successfully been done in over a decade in the area, this is the biggest news in the hospital in a long while. When Chief of Surgery Dana Kinney tells Joel that Prina will be in the surgery instead of Alex, Joel gets upset and makes a stand by going to Alex’s house and persuading her to come in anyway. During the surgery, Alex succeeds in connecting arteries where the other doctor does not (and then corrects his mistake), showing Dana that she has brought her A game. After being the hero of the surgery, Alex is expected to have a party for everybody at her apartment in celebration.
